Subnautica 2 Roadmap: EA Additions

Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026, and instantly became a hit — 2 million copies in the first 12 hours and a peak of 467 thousand concurrent players on Steam. But the current version is just the beginning. Developers from Unknown Worlds Entertainment have already published an official roadmap detailing their plans for the coming months and years. We'll tell you what will be added to Subnautica 2 in updates 1.1, 1.2, and in future large-scale patches.

How Long Will Early Access Last?

Before moving on to specific updates, it's important to understand the scale of the developers' plans. Subnautica 2's Early Access will last approximately 2-3 years. During this time, the studio plans to release small patches for targeted mechanic balancing, as well as delight the audience with large-scale content updates several times a year.

The developers at Unknown Worlds are consistent proponents of open development. They believe that the best final result can only be achieved through close cooperation with players. That is why they did not wait for the full completion of the game — releasing a finished product without lengthy consideration of community feedback, in their opinion, would lead to a deterioration of the final quality.

The roadmap is divided into three main stages: Update 1.1 (Quality of Life), Update 1.2 (Co-op Improvement), and future large-scale expansions. Developers have not yet announced specific release dates.

Update 1.1: Focus on Quality of Life

The first major Subnautica 2 update will focus on improving gameplay systems and addressing the most common player complaints. Developers call it an "intermediate improvement" — a small but important patch that should make the game more enjoyable in the near future.

Planned Improvements

In Update 1.1, developers will focus on the following systems:

BioMod System — a genetic mutation mechanic that allows the player to adapt to the hostile environment. Biomods provide unique abilities — for example, the bio-trail left by the player helps navigate confusing caves or serves as a guide for friends in co-op. The update will improve the balance and usability of this system.

Blight Encounters — one of the new dangers on planet Xezura. The exact details of this mechanic are still kept secret, but developers promise to make encounters with this phenomenon more fair and predictable.

Wrecks Gameplay — exploring sunken ships will be refined. Changes are expected in navigating wrecks and finding valuable blueprints.

Vehicle Docking & Fabrication — improvements in controlling submarines and their creation.

PDA Databank — the interface for storing and viewing found information will be optimized.

Voicelogs Priority System — an improvement to how the game processes and plays audio logs.

Planned New Features

In addition to improvements to existing systems, Update 1.1 will also introduce new functions:

  • More Passive Biomod Slots — the ability to install more genetic enhancements simultaneously
  • Storage Cache — a new storage facility for resources
  • Sprint — a long-awaited fast movement function that players so desperately needed in the first days after release

This update should help "tune and fix some aspects that need refinement to make your Subnautica 2 experience even better."

Update 1.2: Strengthening Co-op

The second planned update will focus on multiplayer — one of the sequel's main features. Subnautica 2 supports co-op for up to 4 players, and developers intend to make joint swimming even more convenient and interesting.

Planned Co-op Improvements

In Update 1.2, the following aspects of multiplayer will be refined:

  • HUD Signals — an improved system of markers and indicators for team navigation. Players will be able to better see where their partners are.
  • Base Builder Tool — refinements in collaborative construction, allowing multiple players to more easily build underwater complexes.
  • Pinned Recipes System — improved display of necessary resources for crafting, synchronized between players.

Planned New Co-op Features

The most interesting are the new functions that will appear in multiplayer:

  • Voice Chat — built-in voice communication, so you don't have to use third-party programs
  • Emotes — gestures and animations for non-verbal communication with partners
  • Player Trading — the ability to exchange resources directly
  • Player Revive — a new mechanic that allows you to revive a downed friend. Developers call this one of the most requested features
  • Additional Customizations — more options for personalizing appearance

These changes should make joint exploration of the depths much more comfortable. It is especially important that the developers listen to community wishes — many of these functions were directly requested by players in the first days after release.

Future Major Updates

After the release of updates 1.1 and 1.2, developers will focus on large expansions that will significantly increase the game world and its content. There are no specific release dates for these updates yet, but they will be the main milestones on the way to the game's full release.

What Will Be Included in Major Expansions

According to the official roadmap, players can expect the following in future large-scale updates:
