How to make a Twitch clip

This question often arises among Twitch users who would like to share thirty-second gameplay recordings with other users. Twitch developers have specially designed and introduced the "Clips" option to the public to implement this idea. Before this feature, users had to purchase special video editing software – Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro. But there was another option – uploading videos from their computer to the popular YouTube video hosting. However, due to duration limitations, such videos could not boast popularity.

In this article, we will thoroughly analyze how to make a clip on Twitch, how to edit and publish clips, what methods exist for creating clips from a computer and a phone, and also what to do if the clip creation button is missing. The material will be useful for viewers who want to save bright moments from their favorite streams, as well as for streamers themselves, who use clips to promote their channel. According to official Twitch statistics, 80% of all clips on the platform are created by viewers, and 70% of them are actively shared on social networks. Clips help not only to save the best moments but also to attract new audiences.

What are Twitch clips and why are they needed

Twitch clips are short video fragments from live broadcasts or recordings that can be created, edited, and shared with other users. The duration of a clip can be from 5 to 60 seconds. During this time, you can capture the brightest moment of the stream: an epic victory, a funny reaction, an unexpected plot twist, or an interesting statement by the streamer.

Why clips are needed:

  • To save a memorable moment from a stream and rewatch it later.
  • To share a bright moment with friends on social networks.
  • To attract new viewers to the streamer's channel – short clips work great on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.
  • To promote your own channel – streamers can select the best clips created by viewers and publish them on their behalf.

Twitch allows you to create clips both while watching a current broadcast and from recordings of past broadcasts. This means that even if you missed a bright moment live, you can always go back to the recording and create a clip later.

How to make a Twitch clip from a computer

The process of creating a clip on Twitch is as simple and intuitive as possible. To create a clip, the user can use one of two options while watching a broadcast or recording.

Method 1. Using the "Clip" button

The special "Clip" button (an icon in the form of a clapperboard or film reel) is located in the lower right corner of the player. When you hover your cursor over the player, control elements appear – among them is the desired button.

Method 2. Using a keyboard shortcut

A faster option is to use the keyboard shortcut Alt+X. This method is especially convenient when you need to quickly react to what is happening on air, without being distracted by searching for the button with your mouse.

Next, the clip creation process consists of 5 stages:

First stage. Open the clip creation window using one of the methods listed above. A clip editor will appear on the screen in the form of an overlay window that does not interrupt the broadcast viewing. This allows you to continue watching the stream while you set up the clip.

Second stage. In the appearing window, a video approximately one and a half minutes long (90 seconds) is automatically loaded. Twitch captures about 85 seconds before the button is pressed and about 5 seconds after, to ensure that the desired moment is not missed. Using the slider, you can select the desired fragment. As a result, we get a clip from 5 to 60 seconds – this is the range supported by the platform.

Third stage. After the desired fragment is selected, you need to add a clip title. The title should be bright and reflect the essence of what is happening. Then click the "Publish" button. Important: the clip will not be saved until you click "Publish" and add a title – this is done specifically to reduce the number of accidental and low-quality clips.

Fourth stage. A window with confirmation of clip creation opens. The system processes the video, and after a few seconds, the clip is ready.

Fifth stage. Finally, we get a window with a link to our video. This link can be copied and shared anywhere – on social networks, messengers, forums.

What to do after publishing a clip

After publishing a clip, you can find all the clips you created in the "Clip Manager" section of the creator dashboard. If you are a streamer, you can also download the clip, edit it, or delete it. Additionally, Twitch allows you to directly publish clips to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram.

How to make a Twitch clip from a phone

The Twitch mobile app also supports clip creation, although the process is slightly different from the computer version.

Instructions for Android and iOS

First step. Open the Twitch app on your smartphone and go to the desired broadcast or recording.

Second step. Tap the screen to display the player controls. The clip icon will appear in the correct place (usually on the right or bottom).

Third step. Tap the clip icon and select the desired duration using the slider. The range is the same – from 5 to 60 seconds.

Fourth step. Add a clip title and tap "Publish".

Important nuance: as of 2026, full clip editing (including vertical version setup) is only available through the computer version. Twitch is working to make clip editing available on mobile devices as well.
