Delete Instagram Account
Deleting an Instagram account is a decision made for various reasons. You might be tired of social media, want to start fresh, move to another platform, or close a business. The reasons can be varied, but one thing is important: delete your account correctly to avoid losing access to important data and regretting your decision.
In 2026, Instagram offers two ways to remove an account: temporary deactivation and full, irrevocable deletion. They differ in terms of duration, possibility of recovery, and what happens to your content.
This guide will walk you through both options. It will tell you what to choose depending on your goal, how to save photos and videos, and what pitfalls to look out for.
Temporary Deactivation or Full Deletion: What to Choose
Before deleting, decide what you truly need.
Temporary Deactivation
Your account is hidden from other users. Your profile is not visible in search, and your posts and stories are not displayed. However, all data is stored on Instagram's servers. You can return at any time by simply logging into your account.
When to choose temporary deactivation: You want to take a break for a few weeks or months. You're not sure if you want to delete permanently. You plan to return later. You have important data that you're afraid to lose.
Full Deletion
Your account and all data are permanently deleted. Posts, stories, followers, following, messages, history — everything disappears. The account cannot be recovered.
When to choose full deletion: You have firmly decided to leave Instagram forever. You're starting from scratch and want your old account to cease to exist. You're closing a business and don't plan to return. You're concerned that your data might be compromised.
Important warning: After full deletion, your username becomes available to others. It can be taken. If you ever plan to return, it's better to choose deactivation or deletion with the creation of a new account using the same username immediately after deletion.
How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Account
Temporary deactivation is only available through the browser version of Instagram. It cannot be done through the app.
Step 1. Open a browser on your phone or computer. Go to instagram.com. Log in to the account you want to deactivate.
Step 2. Click on your profile icon in the top right corner. Select "Profile". Click "Edit Profile".
Step 3. Scroll down the page. Find the link "Temporarily deactivate my account". Click on it.
Step 4. The system will ask you to select a reason for deactivation. Choose the appropriate option from the list. Instagram may ask you to enter your password to confirm.
Step 5. Click "Temporarily Deactivate Account". Done.
What happens after deactivation: Your profile becomes invisible to others. Followers don't see you in their lists. Your comments and likes on other people's posts remain, but your name is replaced with "Instagram User". You cannot use the account while it is deactivated.
How to reactivate your account after deactivation: Simply log in to Instagram with your credentials (username and password). The account will automatically reactivate. All your data, followers, and content will be there.
Limitations of temporary deactivation: You can deactivate your account no more than once a week. You cannot deactivate your account if you have recently changed your password or other important information. Business accounts (professional) must be switched to personal before deactivation.
How to Permanently Delete Your Account
Full deletion is an irreversible process. Be sure of your decision.
Via Browser Version (Primary Method)
Step 1. Open a browser on your computer or phone. Go to the account deletion page: instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent.
Step 2. Log in to your account if you haven't already.
Step 3. Select a reason for deletion from the dropdown list. The system will ask you to enter your password again for confirmation.
Step 4. Click "Delete My Account".
Important: The link to the deletion page may change slightly. If it doesn't work, search for "delete instagram account permanently site instagram.com".
Via In-App Settings (Limited Access)
There is no direct account deletion within the Instagram app. The app will redirect you to the same deletion page in a browser. Therefore, it's easier to use a browser directly.
What Must Be Done Before Deletion
Instagram may refuse deletion if certain conditions are not met. The account must be accessible (not blocked, not shadowbanned). You must remember your password. If the account is linked to a Facebook business page, you must first unlink it. If the account is the sole administrator of a business portfolio, you must transfer ownership or delete the portfolio.
What Happens to Data After Deletion
After clicking "Delete", the account doesn't disappear instantly. Instagram gives you 30 days to change your mind. During this period, the account is deactivated, but the data is stored. You can log back in, and the deletion will be canceled.
After 30 days, the account is permanently deleted. Posts, stories, history, Direct (messages) — everything disappears. Your comments on other people's posts remain, but they are displayed as from "Instagram User". Followers lose you from their lists. Your username becomes available to other users.
How to Save Data Before Deletion
Before permanent deletion, download everything you want to keep.
Downloading a Data Archive
Go to your account settings via a browser. Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Download. Enter the email address where the archive will be sent. Choose the format (JSON or HTML). Click "Request Download". Instagram will prepare the archive within 24–48 hours. The link will be sent to your email.
