Change Your YouTube Avatar

To change your avatar, you need to follow our recommended steps, which will be described below. An avatar is the face of your channel. It's the first thing viewers see when they visit your page or see your comments under videos. A well-chosen avatar increases trust in the channel, makes it recognizable, and attracts new subscribers. In this article, we will explain in detail how to change your YouTube avatar on a computer and phone, why it is linked to your Google account, what image requirements there are, and what to do if the avatar doesn't change. This material will be useful for both new YouTubers and experienced creators who want to update their channel's look.

Why Change Your YouTube Avatar

An avatar (or profile picture) is a small image that appears next to your name on YouTube. It appears in comments, search results, recommendations, subscription lists, and on your channel page. A good avatar serves several important functions.

Recognition. When viewers see your avatar in the recommendations feed, they will recognize your channel faster. This is especially important for bloggers who produce a lot of content.

Trust. A profile with a real photo inspires more trust than an empty gray icon or a random picture. People are more likely to subscribe to channels where there is a real face.

Branding. If you have a logo, you can use it as your avatar. This helps build a recognizable brand. Many successful channels use the same logo on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch.

Impression. The first impression of a channel is often formed by the avatar. It should be high-quality, clear, and relevant to the theme of your content.

Why is the YouTube avatar linked to a Google account?

It's important to understand: your YouTube account is directly linked to your Google account. Therefore, when you change your avatar on YouTube, you are actually changing the profile picture in your Google account. This same picture will be displayed in Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, Google Calendar, and other Google services. If you want to have a separate avatar only for YouTube, you need to create a Brand Account, which we will discuss later.

How to change your YouTube avatar on a computer

First, go to the youtube.com video hosting website and make sure you are logged into the account whose avatar you want to change.

Step-by-step instructions for computer:

First step. Click on your profile icon. It is located in the upper right corner of the screen. This is a round icon—your current avatar or, if you haven't uploaded a photo, the first letter of your name.

Second step. In the drop-down list, find and click on "Settings." It is usually located at the bottom of the menu, next to the gear icon.

Third step. In the left sidebar of the settings, find the "General" section. In some interface versions, this section may be called "Account" or "Account information."

Fourth step. In the "General" section, find "Account settings" and open it. This is a link that redirects you to the page for managing your Google account.

Fifth step. We are redirected to our Google profile page. This is the central control panel for all your profile settings.

Sixth step. On the Google account page, find the "Privacy" or "Personal info" section. Depending on the interface version, the name may differ slightly. We need "Personal info".

Seventh step. Go to the "Personal info" page. All your personal data is collected here: first name, last name, date of birth, gender, contact information, and, of course, your profile picture.

Eighth step. Click on the circle with the current avatar. This is your profile picture. After clicking, a window will appear, offering to replace the photo with a new one.

Ninth step. A file selection window will open. You can upload a new photo from your computer, choose a photo from Google Photos, or take a picture with a webcam (if connected). Choose the appropriate option.

Tenth step. After selecting a photo, you can crop it—select the desired area. Google automatically adjusts the image to the round avatar format. Try to center your face or key element so that it is not cropped.

Eleventh step. Click "Save" or "Done." The new photo will be uploaded to Google's servers.

Twelfth step. All that remains is to follow the recommendations, and you will later have a new avatar on YouTube. Usually, changes take effect within a few minutes. To see the new avatar on YouTube, refresh the page or log out and log in again.

How to change your YouTube avatar on a phone (Android and iOS)

In the YouTube mobile app, the process of changing the avatar is similar to that on a computer. You will still have to go into Google account settings.

Instructions for Android and iOS:

First step. Open the YouTube app on your phone. Tap your avatar in the bottom right corner (in some versions—in the top right).

Second step. In the menu that opens, tap "Manage your Google Account" or go to "Settings" → "Google Account" (depending on the app version).

Third step. You will be taken to the Google app or the account management page will open in your browser. Find the "Personal info" section.

Fourth step. Tap the circle with your avatar. The system will prompt you to upload a new photo—take a picture with the camera, select from the gallery, or upload from Google Photos.

Fifth step. Select the photo, crop it if necessary. Tap "Save."

Sixth step. Close the YouTube app and open it again. The new avatar should be displayed.
