Change Age in YouTube
Many YouTube users sooner or later face the need to change their age in their account. The reasons can vary: you entered the wrong birth date during registration, your account was created long ago and you want to update the information, you've turned 18 and want to remove restrictions on viewing adult content, or you simply made a mistake when entering it. In this article, we will thoroughly explain how to change your age on YouTube, why it cannot be done in the mobile app, how to change your birth date through your Google account on a computer, and what to do if your age doesn't change or is unavailable for editing. This material will be useful to all YouTube users who want to correctly specify their birth date and gain access to all platform features.
Why Age is Important for YouTube
YouTube is a platform that takes age restrictions seriously. The content you can access depends on the birth date specified in your account. If you are under 18, YouTube automatically restricts the display of some videos that may contain profanity, violence, sexual content, or other content not intended for minors. If you are under 13 (or 14 in some countries), you cannot have your own YouTube account—only through a family link to a parent's account.
If your age is entered incorrectly, you may encounter problems: you may not be able to access videos you want to watch, you may be shown irrelevant recommendations based on the incorrect age, in some countries age affects the ability to monetize a channel, and you will not be able to use some features if your age is stated as under 18.
Therefore, it is important that the birth date in your account is specified correctly.
Where Your Birth Date is Stored on YouTube
Your birth date is not stored separately on YouTube. This information is taken from your Google account. Since YouTube is owned by Google, all user data, including name, gender, and birth date, is synchronized across services. Therefore, you can only change your age on YouTube through your Google account settings. By changing your birth date in Google, it will automatically update on YouTube and all other Google services (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, Google Calendar, and others).
Why You Cannot Change Your Age in the YouTube Mobile App
Unfortunately, at present, the YouTube mobile app lacks the function to change the age of the account owner. YouTube developers have not added this option to the Android and iOS apps. This is because changing age is a serious setting that affects account security. Google prefers that users make such important changes through the full version of the website on a computer, where it's easier to verify identity and where the interface allows for all necessary controls.
Because of this, you will have to use the full, i.e., computer, version. If you don't have a computer, you can use a mobile browser in "Desktop version" mode. This is not as convenient, but perfectly functional.
How to Change Your Age on YouTube via Computer
If you want to change the age in your account, follow these step-by-step instructions. The entire process takes no more than 2-3 minutes.
Step-by-step instructions for computer
Step one. Go to the youtube.com video hosting website. Make sure you are logged into the account whose age you want to change.
Step two. Click on your profile icon in the upper right corner. This is a circular icon—your avatar or the first letter of your name.
Step three. In the dropdown list, find and click on "Settings." It is usually located at the bottom of the list, next to the gear icon.
Step four. In the left sidebar menu of settings, find the "General" section. In some interface versions, this section might be called "Account" or "Account information."
Step five. In the "General" section, find "Account settings" and open it. This is a link that redirects you to your Google account management page.
Step six. You will be taken to your Google profile page. All information related to your account is presented here: name, surname, password, recovery methods, birth date, and much more.
Step seven. On the Google account page, find the "Privacy" or "Personal info" section. Depending on the interface version, the name may vary slightly.
Step eight. Go to "Personal info." All your personal data is collected here: name, birth date, gender, contact information.
Step nine. Find "Birthday" and click on the arrow or three-dot icon to its right. The birth date editing page will open.
Step ten. Opposite the date, you can see a pencil icon—the editing icon. Click on it to proceed to editing.
Step eleven. In the opened window, select the correct day, month, and year of your birth. Be careful—Google does not allow frequent changes to the birth date, so it's best to enter the correct information immediately.
Step twelve. Update the information and don't forget to save. Click "Save" or "Done." The system may ask for confirmation—enter your account password or confirm the action by another method.
Step thirteen. Done! The birth date has been updated. Changes will take effect within a few minutes. YouTube will automatically pick up the new birth date from your Google account.
