Survive Subnautica 2 Unarmed
You’ve landed on an alien planet. You're drowning, suffocating, starving. And all around you, huge toothy creatures swim, eager to devour you. Logic dictates: give me a knife, a rifle, a harpoon—anything! But the developers of Subnautica 2 from Unknown Worlds Entertainment stubbornly say: no.
Moreover, they have officially confirmed that there will never be weapons in the game. No knife, no pistol, no harpoon. Even the iconic knife from the first game has been replaced by a cutting tool not designed for combat. Instead, the game relies on evasion, stealth, and "peaceful" defensive tools.
But how do you survive in an ocean full of predators if you can't fight back? Here are 5 effective ways to help you stay alive.
Method 1. Use Distraction Flares — your main weapon early game
This is the simplest and most accessible method in the early stages. Flares can be crafted right from the start, and the materials for them (scrap metal and silicon) are literally lying around.
How it works:
Craft flares in the damaged fabricator of your escape pod. The recipe yields three at a time — and always keep them on your quick access bar. When you spot a predator, take out a flare, light it, and throw it away from where you need to swim.
The predator will be distracted by the bright light and noise, giving you a few seconds to escape. Sounds simple — but in practice, it can be terrifying when a five-meter-long toothy shadow swims directly overhead.
Important: flares are a temporary solution. Most predators quickly recover, so carry a spare and don't linger in dangerous areas.
Method 2. Sonic Resonator — your first "shield"
The Sonic Resonator is a key survival tool that you will obtain as you progress through the story. It's not a weapon — it's more of a "non-lethal deterrent."
Where to find: The Resonator can be scanned in Wu "Wu" Lianghai's Blackbox location — in the building across from the Old Residence complex on the lower level.
What the Resonator does: It emits sound waves that stun medium-sized predators, giving you a small head start to swim away. The resonator is also used for resource extraction — it blows away biofilm and extracts ore that would otherwise be inaccessible.
The problem is that lead for crafting the resonator is hard to find early in the game. Look for it in stony outcrops at the border of the starting biome.
Method 3. Biomods — your superpowers for survival
The coolest innovation in Subnautica 2 is the biomod system. These are genetic modifications that give you active and passive abilities. Essentially, these are the "superpowers" that replace your weapons.
Electric Discharge — equivalent to an electric shock
To get this ability, you need to scan the Electric Geordie creature. After installing the biomod, you can release an 800-volt discharge that repels medium and large predators. This is an emergency measure when a predator has already grabbed you or your submarine.
Camouflage — become invisible
Scan the Bullethead in the Krakorum area (possibly in the alien ruins area). After installing this passive biomod, you become invisible to predators when not moving. A great way to hide in a crevice and wait for the danger to pass.
Dash — sudden acceleration
Available by default. Allows you to make a sudden dash in any direction. Saves you from a sudden attack or helps you quickly dive into cover.
Chum Cloud — distracting cloud
Scan Toxic Sponge and Houndgar. Creates a bait cloud that distracts predators. Ideal when you need to break through a dangerous zone.
Once you unlock biomods and install them in your Biolab, you'll stop being just "meat" in a hostile ocean. You'll become a predator who is smarter, faster, and more stealthy.
Method 4. Vehicle — your armor and speed
Moving across Proteus (the new planet) by swimming is certain death. Your main goal is to build a Tadpole submarine as quickly as possible.
Why the Tadpole changes the game
Your first submarine is not just a means of transport. It's your armor. An encounter with a Collector Leviathan, for example, transforms from "I'm going to be eaten" to a challenge for your submarine's survival.
Survival tips with the Tadpole:
- Reinforce the hull. Look for lithium and titanium to upgrade armor. This will allow your vessel to survive not one, but several attacks from giant monsters.
- Install the "Perimeter Defense System." This device is the only thing that can detach you from the Collector Leviathan's tentacles. When it grabs your submarine, activate the system — and the monster will release you.
- Stick to the bottom. Large leviathans patrol open water. If you hug the bottom and hide behind rocks, you'll be noticed much less often.
- Don't turn on headlights. Artificial light attracts aggressive fauna. Rely on radar and navigation markers.
Method 5. Knowledge is power: learn to read your environment
The most effective way to "defeat" a predator is not to be seen by it. As in real diving, knowing shark behavior saves lives.
Study behaviors
Every large predator in Subnautica 2 has a clear territory and attack trigger.
Collector Leviathan: It attacks your vehicle. If you hear a roar and a change in music — you are in its zone. Move to the surface or to the biome border to disengage aggression. Its main task is to guard the transition to more complex locations (The Observatory, Root Canyon).
Shiver Leviathan: This monster inhabits the edge of the map (The Void). It punishes players for trying to swim beyond the boundaries. Forget about scanning — just don't swim there.
