Why your stream is lagging: breaking down the main causes

Weak CPU or graphics card

The most common cause of lag is a lack of hardware resources. Streaming simultaneously encodes video, runs the game, and processes scenes. If the CPU is at 100% load, you get frame drops, freezes, and audio desync.

Check CPU and GPU usage in Task Manager during the broadcast. If the CPU consistently stays above 90%, consider lowering the encoding preset or switching to a hardware encoder like NVENC or AMD AMF.

Incorrect bitrate

Bitrate directly affects picture quality and stability. Too high a bitrate overloads your channel and causes buffering for viewers. Too low a bitrate makes the picture look blurry.

For Twitch, the optimal range is 4500–6000 kbps at 1080p60. For YouTube, you can go higher, from 9000 kbps. If your channel can't handle the load, lower the bitrate in steps of 500 kbps until the issues disappear.

Overloaded scenes in OBS

Every source in a scene — browser overlay, webcam, window capture, animation — eats up resources. When these sources pile up, performance drops even on powerful systems.

Disable unused sources. Replace animated browser overlays with static ones. Capture the game via Game Capture rather than Display Capture — this reduces the load.

Network issues and unstable internet

Even with perfect hardware, your stream can lag due to packet loss, high ping, or an unstable connection. Check your upload speed on Speedtest and packet loss in OBS settings.

• Packet loss should be 0% throughout the entire broadcast.
• Ping to the Twitch or YouTube ingest server should be below 50 ms.
• Upload speed should be at least double your set bitrate.

Connect to the nearest broadcast server manually rather than using auto-detection. If you're on Wi-Fi, switch to a cable.

Background processes and startup items

Browsers, Discord, Windows updates, antivirus software — all of this runs in the background and eats up resources. Close unnecessary apps before streaming. Disable automatic system and driver updates during the broadcast.

In Windows, enable Game Mode — it prioritizes the game and stream over background tasks. Disable Xbox Game Bar if you don't use its features.

Incorrect encoding settings

The x264 veryfast preset puts less load on the system than medium or slow, but produces worse quality at the same bitrate. For single-PC streaming, veryfast or faster is recommended. If you have a second machine or a powerful GPU with NVENC — use hardware encoding.

Stream resolution also affects the load. Dropping from 1080p to 900p or 720p significantly relieves the CPU without a noticeable quality loss on smaller screens.

Outdated drivers and OBS

Old GPU drivers can cause load spikes and conflicts with the encoder. Update drivers through official NVIDIA or AMD utilities. Keep OBS itself and its plugins up to date as well — new versions often fix memory leaks and optimize performance.

Component overheating

High temperatures lead to throttling — a forced reduction in CPU and GPU clock speeds. As a result, the stream starts lagging 20–30 minutes after going live.

Check temperatures under load. For a CPU, up to 85 °C is safe; for a GPU, up to 83 °C. Clean the cooling system, replace thermal paste, and adjust the fan curve.

ISP channel quality

Even if tests show good speeds, your actual channel can lose packets during peak hours. Check stability for 10–15 minutes using PingPlotter or WinMTR to the streaming platform's server.

If packet loss appears periodically — contact your ISP. Sometimes switching to a plan with higher traffic priority or moving to another provider helps.
