TheBrianMaps: 5M subs lost
Brian Maps (real name: Maxim Tarasenko) is one of the brightest and most controversial figures on Russian-language YouTube. In early 2024, his channel had around 18.4 million subscribers. Today, just two years later, that number stands at 18.1 million. Losing "only" 300,000 subscribers from such a large base isn't a catastrophe. But the real problem lies elsewhere. Brian Maps' channel, which once garnered millions of views a day, is barely breathing today. His old videos, which brought him fame, are a thing of the past. And his new ones gather significantly less attention.
How did a blogger, who in 2016 was nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and won the #TwitterStar award, beating Katya Clap and Yan Gordienko, miss the moment? Why did his "empire" crack? And most importantly, can it be restored?
Let's find out. This isn't just a story about a fall. It's a story of how platform evolution, changing audience interests, and the blogger's internal conflicts led to stagnation.
Who is Brian Maps: from schoolboy to idol of millions
Early years and first steps
Maxim Tarasenko was born on September 25, 1999, in the city of Kinel, Samara region. His childhood was entirely ordinary: school, computer games, free time spent in front of the monitor. Like many teenagers of that time, he was fond of YouTube.
On June 10, 2011, at the age of 11, Maxim created his first channel called "Maxutko99." It featured Minecraft let's plays, tutorial videos, and reviews of internet videos. But the real breakthrough was "Tiger Show" – a parody of Maxim Golopolosov's popular show "+100500," where toys in the shape of animals acted as the hosts.
However, the channel didn't last long. On June 3, 2012, the last video was released, and "Maxutko99" was closed. But Maxim wasn't going to stop.
The birth of TheBrianMaps
On June 4, 2012, literally the day after the old channel closed, Maxim registered a new one – "TheBrianMaps." The name was not chosen by chance: "Brian" is a reference to a character from the cartoon series "Family Guy" (Brian Griffin), and "Maps" is simply an alliteration that made the name memorable.
The first videos were dedicated to Minecraft – let's plays, reviews, playthroughs. But even then, Maxim stood out from the rest: his content wasn't just "watch me play," but full of humor, elements of a show, and audience engagement.
Breakthrough: 2015–2016
The real breakthrough happened in 2015 when Brian started experimenting with the genre. He came up with challenges: smashing eggs on his head, taking ice showers, wrapping himself in toilet paper. These videos went viral and attracted millions of viewers.
In 2015, the channel surpassed 2 million subscribers. In 2016, Brian entered the top 10 most popular Russian video bloggers. He was nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in the "Favorite Russian Video Blogger" category and won the first Russian #TwitterStar award, beating Katya Clap by a mere 1250 votes.
Everything indicated that Brian Maps was a rising star, about to reach the pinnacle of Russian-language YouTube.
Career heyday: 2017–2019
Sketches and characters: the golden era of content
The peak of Brian Maps' popularity came between 2017–2019. It was then that he started releasing sketches – short humorous videos featuring fictional characters. The main characters: Brian himself, his arrogant "girlfriend" Olivia, and the bullied "nerd" Botan. Maxim played all three himself, changing clothes and voices.
Viewers adored this dynamic. Olivia constantly humiliated Brian, Botan was the scapegoat, and Brian himself was a naive guy who always found himself in ridiculous situations. The humor was simple but sincere. It didn't require deep analysis but brought a smile.
In addition to sketches, Brian filmed parodies of popular TV shows: "Revizorro," "Battle of Psychics," "Pregnant at 16," "Come Dine With Me." He also created a series of videos called "My Cat Tries to Kill Me," which went viral and garnered tens of millions of views.
"The Last Button": a film meant to be the climax
On April 9, 2019, Brian Maps' channel reached 10 million subscribers. In honor of this event, he announced the release of a short film called "The Last Button."
On July 23, 2019, the film was released. It was a full-fledged horror-thriller with comedic elements, where Brian, Olivia, and Botan fall into the trap of an obsessed fan. The film was shot with a professional team, in rented locations, with high-quality editing and sound. It wasn't just a "YouTube video," but a real movie.
Viewers were delighted. The film garnered millions of views and confirmed Brian's status as one of the most ambitious bloggers in the Russian internet.
First cracks: 2020–2021
The end of the sketch era
After the release of "The Last Button," Brian continued to make sketches, but their quality and frequency began to decline. In May 2020, the last sketch featuring Olivia and Botan was released – "Our Last Day."
On June 3, 2021, Brian released a sequel – "The Last Button 2," which put an end to the entire storyline. The film was even darker and more serious. In it, the YouTube corporation became the antagonist, and Brian himself found himself trapped by his own success.
After that, sketches completely stopped. The official reason was "I grew up, and my interests changed." But viewers began to ask questions: will there be no more Olivia and Botan? Is this the end of an era?
Declining engagement
After the sketches ended, Brian switched to other formats: lifestyle, challenges, horror game playthroughs, and icebergs. But something went wrong.
