Telegram Invite Links: How to Separate Traffic Sources
Why You Need Separate Telegram Invite Links
A single shared link to a channel or group doesn't show where a new member came from. If you've placed it in a video description, a streaming platform profile, a social media post, and on your website, all joins get mixed together.
Telegram lets you create additional invite links. Each link leads to the same channel or group but is used for a separate source. That way you can compare not only overall audience growth but also the contribution of different platforms.
For example, you can make a link for YouTube video descriptions, a link for your Twitch profile, and a link for a pinned post on VK. If one source needs to be split across several ad placements, you create different links for those as well.
This method shows joins, not all clicks. Telegram doesn't turn an invite link into a full-fledged web analytics system: the number of clicks and a person's behavior before joining may not be available.
How to Plan Your Source Tagging
First, decide which sources you actually need to compare. You don't have to create a separate link for every message if the posts belong to the same campaign and the overall result is enough for you. Too many links will complicate tracking and increase the risk of errors.
Typically, you tag separately:
- social networks and messaging apps;
- video descriptions and profiles on streaming platforms;
- your website, blog, and individual pages;
- advertisements or partner placements.
Come up with a clear naming scheme. For example, you can include the platform and placement in the link name: "YouTube description," "Twitch profile," "VK pinned." If your version of Telegram has a field for the link name, use it. The name is visible to admins and helps you avoid mixing up links later.
It's important to consider how links spread. A user can copy a link from a video description and send it to a friend. In that case, Telegram will credit the join to the original link, even though the person actually discovered the channel somewhere else. So the data shows the link's source, not always the last ad touchpoint.
How to Create a Separate Link in Telegram
Links can be created by the channel or group owner, as well as by an admin with the appropriate permission. Open the relevant space in Telegram, go to management or editing, and find the "Invite Links" section. Menu item names may differ slightly on phone, desktop, and across different app versions.
This section usually shows the primary link and a list of additional ones. It's best not to use the primary link to analyze individual sources: it may already be in old posts, with partners, or in saved messages. For a new placement, choose to create an additional link.
Telegram will then prompt you to configure the parameters. Enter a name if that field is available, set an expiration date or a user limit, and choose whether a join request is required. Then save the link and copy it to the desired placement.
On desktop, the path to settings may look different, but the logic is the same: open channel or group management, find invite links, create a new one, and copy the result. If the section isn't there, check your admin rights and the type of space.
For a public channel, some of the audience may come in by its name rather than through an invite link. Those joins won't be attributed to a specific source. If tagging matters to you, share the link you created and don't replace it with the regular channel address.
What Restrictions You Can Add to a Link
An additional link has several useful parameters. An expiration date works well for a temporary ad campaign, a live stream, a contest, or a post that should only run for a limited period. After the date passes, the link stops accepting new members.
A user limit is handy for small closed intakes and partner placements. Once the limit is reached, new people can't join through that link. For permanent sources, this parameter usually isn't used, so you don't get a sudden stop in traffic.
In groups and channels, you can enable request approval if you want to vet new members before they access the content. In this mode, clicking the link and actually joining are two different events. When analyzing, separate submitted requests, approved requests, and the actual number of new members.
Choose parameters based on the task, not the same way for every source. For a link from a permanent profile, a long duration with no limit works well. For an ad placement with a fixed end date, use a link with an expiration date. For a closed community, you may need manual approval.
A QR code, if Telegram offers one for the link, doesn't create a separate source on its own. It points to the same invite link. So for offline advertising, first create a separate link, and only then generate a QR code for it.

How to Evaluate Joins by Source
After publishing, open invite link management and check the data for the relevant link. Telegram may show the number of users who joined through it, as well as related information. The set of metrics depends on the type of space, admin rights, and app version.
Don't confuse joins with clicks. A person may open the link, close the page, and not join. They may already be in the channel, and another user may send the link to several people. So it's best to use the link counter to evaluate new members, not as a substitute for click statistics.
For practical tracking, it's enough to record the source name, link address, publication date, expiration date, and number of joins. If the link was changed or revoked, note that separately. That way you won't mistake an old campaign for a new one and can match results to the placement period.
When you need click data, use an intermediate page with web analytics. You can drive users to it via a link with source tags, and then direct them from that page to Telegram. Clicks and joins will then live in different systems, but you can match them by source and period.
A direct Telegram invite link doesn't receive UTM tags automatically. Adding parameters to its address doesn't turn Telegram into a system that passes ad tags to the admin. For separate tracking, use separate links or an intermediate page.
How to Check a Link Before Publishing
First, verify that the link leads to the right channel or group. Then make sure the name and parameters are saved correctly: the expiration date, user limit, and request approval should match the task.
To test a join, use an account that isn't yet a member of that space, or ask a colleague to open the link. Check whether a request appears, whether the content is accessible, and whether the new member shows up in the link data. A test join may be counted in the statistics, so factor it in when analyzing.
After publishing, don't change the link unless necessary. If you replace it in one place but leave the old one in another, the data will split and the source will become harder to evaluate. When updating an ad placement, decide in advance whether to keep collecting stats in the existing counter or create a new link.
Check the link after changes to channel or group settings as well. If the link stops working, check its expiration, limit, and revocation status. An invite link may look valid but no longer accept new members due to restrictions.
What to Do If a Link Ends Up in the Wrong Place
A link can be forwarded, so you can't fully control how it spreads. If the data for a source becomes unreliable, don't carry the old link into a new campaign. Create a separate one and use it only in fresh posts.
If a link was published by mistake, became available to outsiders, or is no longer needed, you can revoke it in invite link management. Before revoking, save the relevant result data so you don't lose context for later analysis.
For a public channel, some users may still come in via the channel name, a forwarded message, or a search within Telegram. Separate links help you distribute the sources you know about, but they don't give a complete picture of where each subscriber came from.
Keep an eye on admin rights too. Creating, changing, and revoking links should only be available to those responsible for the channel or group. This reduces the risk of accidental link replacement and broken statistics.
Takeaways: What to Do Step by Step
- Identify the sources you want to compare.
- Create a separate invite link for each source.
- Give the links clear names and set an expiration date, limit, or request approval.
- Place each link only in the chosen source.
- Check the number of joins in link management and track clicks separately.
- Revoke unneeded links and create new ones for upcoming campaigns.
