How to Find Out Who Unsubscribed from a VK Community

How to Find Out Who Unsubscribed from a VK Community

Short answer: directly — there's no way

VK doesn't show the administrator a ready-made list of people who unsubscribed from the community. In the standard statistics, you can see the dynamics: how many members joined, how many left, and how the total number of subscribers changed over the selected period. The names of those who left the community are usually not displayed there.

The current member list doesn't solve the problem either. You can find a specific person in it today, but you won't know whether they were subscribed before. If a user is no longer among the members, this could mean an unsubscribe, a community block, a deleted page, or restricted access to the account.

So the answer depends on the goal. If you need to understand whether the audience is growing and on which days unsubscribes happen, the built-in statistics are enough. If you need specific profiles, you'll have to save member lists in advance and compare them with each other.

Where to see the number of unsubscribes in community statistics

Statistics are accessible to the owner and administrators with the appropriate rights. Open the desired community, go to the management section, and find the "Statistics" item. The names of sections and the placement of elements may differ in the full and mobile versions of VK.

  1. Select the period for which you want to run the check.
  2. Open the block related to audience growth or subscribers.
  3. Compare the number of members who joined and those who left.
  4. See on which days the indicator changed the most.

In some sections, the data is presented as a graph, in others — as individual indicators. What matters is not only the total for a month or a week, but also sharp changes on specific dates. These can be compared with publications, contests, advertising, a change in topic, or posting frequency.

The overall growth indicator doesn't equal the number of new subscribers. For example, new people may have joined the community, but some of the old members left. As a result, the audience grew only slightly, even though both the inflow and the outflow were noticeable.

Why statistics don't name departed users

Community statistics are designed for analyzing the audience, not for keeping a history of each member's actions. VK shows the owner aggregated data but doesn't send a notification with the user's name after each unsubscribe.

Besides a regular exit from the community, other events can affect the member count:

  • the user left the community on their own;
  • an administrator removed them from subscribers or blocked them;
  • the page was deleted, frozen, or became unavailable;
  • the member temporarily restricted access to their profile;
  • the method of counting or displaying the audience in the interface changed.

So even comparing two lists doesn't always prove that a person actually unsubscribed. It only shows one thing: the user was in the first list and is absent from the second. The reason for leaving can only be determined in certain cases, and not always reliably.

How to identify specific users by comparing lists

The most straightforward way is to take snapshots of the member list at equal intervals. On the first day, save the list, then repeat the check later. Users who disappeared from the new list will end up in the list of candidates for unsubscribing.

  1. Record the date and time of the first check.
  2. Get the list of current community members.
  3. Save user identifiers in a separate file or table.
  4. Repeat getting the list after the chosen period.
  5. Compare the old and new identifiers.
  6. Check the found profiles manually if necessary.

For a small group, such monitoring can be done manually if the platform or working tool allows viewing and saving the list. For a large community, a technical export is usually used. The VK API has tools for getting the member list, but working with them requires skills in setting up access, processing data, and storing results.

You need to compare identifiers, not names and links. A user can change their name, and the page link can become outdated. At the same time, you shouldn't collect more data than is needed for analytics, and you must not publish the resulting lists.

The method has limitations. If a person joined and left between two checks, you won't notice it. Also, blocked or deleted accounts may disappear from the list. The less frequently the check is performed, the less accurate the result will be.

Should you use apps and bots

Third-party apps may promise notifications about unsubscribes or automatic comparison of members. Before connecting, check what permissions the tool requests, where the data is stored, and whether it can be deleted after you finish working.

Don't give a third-party service the password to your page. Don't publish the community token, and don't grant access that isn't needed for a specific task. If an app asks for rights to publish, send messages, or manage the community, even though you only need the member list, that's a reason to refuse the connection.

Also clarify what exactly the service counts. Some tools only track changes in the total member count, while others compare available lists. These are different tasks. A promise to "show everyone who unsubscribed" doesn't mean the app can restore a history that wasn't saved in advance.

How to use unsubscribe data

The list of departed users by itself doesn't explain the reason for the decline in interest. It's much more useful to find a pattern: after which publications or actions the audience shrinks more noticeably.

  • Compare the unsubscribe dates with publications and advertising placements.
  • Separately note contests, mass mailings, and a sharp change in topic.
  • Compare the audience's reaction to different content formats.
  • Check whether there have become too many publications.
  • Ask current subscribers what materials they need.

You shouldn't write to every departed user demanding an explanation. This can be perceived as pressure and worsen the negative impression. It's better to use depersonalized statistics, surveys, and analysis of the remaining audience's behavior.

If unsubscribes started after advertising or mutual promotion, evaluate not only the number of new members but also their subsequent activity. An audience that came for a temporary incentive and quickly left doesn't always match the community's topic.

Conclusions: what to do step by step

  1. Open the community statistics and find the subscriber dynamics.
  2. Identify the dates and publications after which unsubscribes increased.
  3. If you need names, start saving member lists in advance.
  4. Compare lists by identifiers and take deleted or blocked pages into account.
  5. Use the result to analyze content, not to obsessively bring back departed users.
