Trim YouTube Videos
If you use YouTube and need to trim a video, you can use the video editor in YouTube Creator Studio. Thanks to it, you can cut any segment from a video clip without losing quality and without needing to re-upload the video. The advantage is that re-uploading will not be necessary, and the link, number of views, and all comments will remain in place. In this article, we will thoroughly analyze how to trim a video on YouTube, how to remove a middle segment, what limitations exist when working with the video editor, and also provide useful tips for editing videos directly on the platform. This material will be useful for both beginner YouTubers who are just learning the platform's tools and experienced creators who want to quickly edit already uploaded videos without losing statistics.
Why you need a video editor in YouTube Creator Studio
After a video is uploaded to YouTube, sometimes it needs to be re-edited. You might have noticed an error at the beginning or end of the video, an unnecessary pause, an awkward segment, or simply decided that the video is too long and should be shortened. Previously, this required downloading the video, editing it in a third-party program (such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or even simple Movie Maker), and then re-uploading it. This caused the loss of all views, likes, comments, and the video link.
The YouTube video editor solves this problem. You can edit videos directly on the platform, and all metrics remain unchanged. This is incredibly convenient for quick fixes, especially if you don't have the time or skills to work with professional video editors.
Key features of the YouTube video editor:
- Trimming the beginning and end of a video.
- Cutting segments from the middle of a video.
- Blurring faces and objects ("Blur Assistant" function).
- Adding music from YouTube's free audio library.
- Adding cards and end screens.
In this article, we will focus on video trimming — the most requested feature.
What videos can be edited in the YouTube video editor
Before proceeding with the instructions, it's important to be aware of the limitations. This feature is available if the video is no longer than 6 hours. If your video is longer than 6 hours, the video editor might not work or might work incorrectly. For such long videos, it's recommended to use third-party editing programs before uploading. Also, the feature is only available for videos you've uploaded (not for someone else's videos). Editing is only possible in the desktop version of Creator Studio – this feature is not available in the YouTube mobile app. A stable internet connection is required for the video editor to work, as video processing occurs on YouTube's servers.
How to trim the beginning or end of a YouTube video
If you need to trim the beginning or end of a video, the process is as simple and intuitive as possible. This is the most common operation: removing unnecessary silence at the beginning, a long intro, or a bad ending.
Step-by-step instructions for desktop
First step. Go to YouTube Creator Studio. To do this, click on your avatar in the upper right corner of YouTube and select "Creator Studio."
Second step. In the left menu, select the "Content" section. This displays all your uploaded videos.
Third step. Find the video you want to trim. Hover over it and click the pencil icon (edit) or click on the video itself.
Fourth step. On the video editing page that opens, go to the "Editor" tab. It is located in the top menu, next to the "Details," "Monetization," and other tabs.
Fifth step. Click the "Trim" button. After that, an area with a blue highlight appears on the timeline. The blue area is the part of the video that will remain after trimming. Everything outside the blue area will be deleted.
Sixth step. Drag the left boundary of the blue area to the right to trim the beginning of the video. If you need to trim the end, drag the right boundary of the blue area to the left. The blue area shows which part of the video will remain. You can observe the frame thumbnails to precisely determine the desired moment.
Seventh step. To make sure you've done everything correctly, you can select "Preview." YouTube will show you what the trimmed video will look like. If you're satisfied, proceed to the next step. If not, adjust the trimming boundaries.
Eighth step. All that remains is to click the "Save" button. YouTube will begin processing the video. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the length of the video. Once processing is complete, the trimmed video will be available for viewing. The video link, number of views, likes, dislikes, and comments will remain the same.
How to cut a segment from the middle of a video
Sometimes you need to remove not the beginning or end, but a segment from the middle of the video. For example, you made a mistake during recording, said something wrong, or simply want to remove a boring section. The YouTube video editor allows you to do this.
Instructions for cutting a segment from the middle
First step. Open the video in Creator Studio and go to the "Editor" tab, as described above.
Second step. Click the "Edit" button or the scissors icon. In some interface versions, this button is called "Cut."
Third step. The timeline will now allow you to add markers. Click where the segment to be deleted should begin. Then click where it should end. The selected area will be highlighted.
