Change YouTube Language

If you need to change the language on YouTube but can't find where to do it yourself, we're here to help. YouTube is one of the world's most popular platforms, available in dozens of languages. But sometimes, on your first visit, the language might not be what you need. Or perhaps you're learning a foreign language and want to practice by reading the interface in English. Or you've moved to another country and want to see content in the local language. In this article, we'll thoroughly explain how to change the language on YouTube on both computers and smartphones, how to change the interface language and content language, and what to do if the language doesn't change. This material will be useful for all YouTube users, regardless of their computer proficiency.

Why you might need to change the language on YouTube

There can be several reasons to change the YouTube interface language. You might have accidentally selected the wrong language during registration or your first login. You've moved to another country and want to see the interface in that country's language. You're learning a foreign language and want to immerse yourself, reading buttons and menus in the language you're studying. You're using a shared computer or device where the language is set differently and want to make it convenient for yourself. Or you simply want to see what YouTube looks like in another language out of curiosity.

It's important to understand that changing the interface language does not affect the language of videos and subtitles. You will still see videos in the language they were created by the author, and subtitles need to be enabled separately.

How to change YouTube language on computer (PC)

To change the language on YouTube via PC, you need to follow a few simple steps. The process is the same for all browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera, and others.

Step-by-step instructions for computer

First step. Go to YouTube and click on your account image. It's located in the top right corner of the screen. This is a circular icon – your avatar, or if you haven't uploaded a photo, the first letter of your name.

Second step. In the dropdown list, find "Language." It's located at the bottom of the menu, usually between "Appearance" and "Location." In some interface versions, it might be called "Language and Location."

Third step. Clicking on "Language" brings up a list of various languages, sorted alphabetically. Here you'll find dozens of languages: English, Russian, Ukrainian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and many others.

Fourth step. All that's left is to select and click on the desired language. For example, if you want a Russian interface, find "Русский" in the list and click on it.

Fifth step. The page will automatically reload, and the YouTube interface will switch to the selected language. All done. If it doesn't reload, refresh the page manually by pressing F5 or the refresh icon in your browser.

What other items in the language menu mean

Besides selecting a specific language, there's another important item in the menu: "Content language." This setting influences which content (videos, subtitles, descriptions) YouTube will primarily recommend to you. For example, if you select "Russian," the algorithms will more often show you videos in Russian. If you select "English," then videos in English. It's recommended to set the content language that you understand best.

How to change YouTube language on smartphone (Android and iOS)

In the YouTube mobile app, changing the language is a bit different than on a computer. The app's interface is tied to your phone's system settings.

Instructions for Android

First step. Open your phone's "Settings." Second step. Find "System" or "Additional settings," then "Language & input." Third step. Select "Language" and move the desired language to the top of the list, making it primary. Fourth step. After this, YouTube will automatically switch to that language. If it doesn't, restart the app.

Instructions for iPhone (iOS)

First step. Open "Settings" on your iPhone. Second step. Find "General" → "Language & Region." Third step. Tap "iPhone Language" and select the desired language. Fourth step. Confirm the change. The phone will restart, and the interface language of all apps, including YouTube, will change.

Important nuance: The YouTube mobile app does not have a separate language setting. The app uses the language set on your phone. So, if you want YouTube in Russian, but other apps in English, you'll have to accept that the language will change everywhere. An exception is some custom Android firmware that allows setting languages for individual apps, but that's a complex topic.

How to change YouTube language via mobile browser

If you use YouTube not through the app but through a mobile browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox), the process for changing the language is the same as on a computer.

Instructions for mobile browser:

First step. Open your browser and go to youtube.com. Second step. Tap your avatar in the top right corner. Third step. In the dropdown menu, find "Language" and tap it. Fourth step. Select the desired language from the list. Fifth step. The page will reload, and the interface will change.

The advantage of using a browser instead of the app is that you can set a language different from your phone's system language.

How to change subtitle language on YouTube

Many confuse changing the interface language with changing the subtitle language. These are different settings. Subtitle language can be changed for each video separately.
