OBS Studio Setup for Streaming in 2026: From Installation to Going Live

OBS Studio Setup for Streaming in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide From Installation to Your First Stream

To set up OBS Studio for streaming in 2026, download the current version 33.0 from obsproject.com, paste your platform's stream key in the Stream section, and in the Output section choose your graphics card's hardware encoder, CBR rate control, a bitrate within the platform's limit and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. For Twitch that is up to 6000 kbps in H.264, for Kick up to 8000 kbps, for 1080p60 on YouTube 12–17 Mbps is recommended, and for VK Video Live 4500–9000 kbps. After that you only need a 1920×1080 or 1280×720 resolution at 60 FPS, microphone filters, a couple of scenes and a check of the stats.

Installation and the Auto-Configuration Wizard

The current stable version at the end of October 2026 is OBS Studio 33.0.0, released on October 23. You need Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 13 or newer on a Mac. Download it only from obsproject.com or GitHub. In version 33, third-party plugins moved to a new folder, but the old paths keep working until version 34.0.

On first launch OBS opens the Auto-Configuration Wizard. You can open it again later via Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. It looks at your CPU, graphics card and internet speed and suggests a resolution, frame rate and bitrate.

When you can trust it:

  • you stream to one platform, play a regular game and have a stable wired connection, so the wizard's result works as a starting point;
  • the wizard picked a hardware encoder (NVENC, AMF or QSV), which is almost always the right call.

When you should double-check manually:

  • you stream over Wi-Fi or mobile internet, because a short speed test does not catch dips;
  • the wizard set a bitrate above the platform's limit or above half of your upload speed;
  • the game is heavy and already loads the graphics card to 95–100%, which the wizard does not take into account.

Stream: Stream Key and Server

Open File → Settings → Stream. For Twitch and YouTube it is easier to click Connect Account: OBS fills in the key itself, and for Twitch it also adds the chat and activity docks. For Kick and VK Video Live choose the Custom... service and enter the server address and key manually.

PlatformWhere to get the keyServer
TwitchCreator Dashboard → Settings → StreamAuto in the OBS list
YouTubeYouTube Studio → Go Live → Stream settingsrtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2 (filled in automatically)
Kickdashboard.kick.com → Channel → Stream URL and KeyThe address from the same window, Custom... service
VK Video LiveStudio → Streams tabThe server URL from Studio, Custom... service

We covered in detail, with screenshots, where the key is located in a separate article: where to get your YouTube or Twitch stream key. Never show your key to anyone: with it, anyone can broadcast on your channel. If the key ended up on screen or in chat, reset it in the platform's settings.

Output: Encoder, Bitrate, Keyframes

In the Output section, switch Output Mode to Advanced: only there are all the necessary parameters visible. On the Streaming tab, choose an encoder.

  • NVENC — NVIDIA graphics cards. The best option for game streaming from a single PC: the load barely affects the game.
  • AMD AMF — Radeon graphics cards. Version 33.0 fixed a B-frame bug that could cause the stream to break up, so it is worth updating.
  • Intel QSV — Intel integrated graphics and Arc cards.
  • x264 — CPU encoding. It makes sense if your processor is powerful and not loaded by the game, or on a second PC dedicated to streaming.

If you are torn between the processor and the graphics card, take a look at our comparison x264 vs NVENC for streaming.

Pick the codec to suit the platform, not simply the newest one:

PlatformCodecsVideo bitrate
Twitch, standard modeH.264up to 6000 kbps
Twitch, Enhanced BroadcastingH.264 up to 1080p, HEVC for 1440pup to 7.5 Mbps at 1080p, up to 9 Mbps at 1440p
YouTubeH.264, HEVC, AV11080p60: 12 Mbps in AV1/HEVC, 17 Mbps in H.264
KickH.264 onlyup to 8000 kbps
VK Video Livethe help pages list x264 and NVENC1080p60: 4500–9000 kbps

The remaining parameters on the tab:

  • Rate Control — CBR. Kick does not accept variable bitrate at all, and YouTube also recommends constant bitrate.
  • Keyframe Interval — 2 seconds. A value of 0 means automatic, and the interval can then turn out longer than the platform requires.
  • Preset — for NVENC start with P5 or P6, for x264 with veryfast. If you get skipped frames due to encoding, move one step toward a faster preset.
  • Audio — AAC, 160 kbps stereo. This fits within the limits of Twitch, YouTube and VK Video Live.

Do not set the bitrate right up against your internet speed. A good rule of thumb: video plus audio should take no more than 70–75% of your stable upload speed, and the rest is a buffer for dips.

Enhanced Broadcasting on Twitch

Enhanced Broadcasting is a mode in which OBS encodes several versions of your stream at once (for example 1080p, 720p and 480p) on your graphics card and sends them to Twitch together. Viewers with a weak connection get a ready-made lower quality, even if the channel has no server-side transcoding. OBS receives the bitrate and resolutions from Twitch automatically.

Twitch launched the mode in January 2024 as a closed beta, and since July 2024 it has been available to everyone in OBS 30.2 and newer. Version 31.1 added it on Macs with Apple Silicon and on Linux. According to the OBS release notes, you need an NVIDIA GTX 900 series or newer, or an AMD RX 6000 series or newer, graphics card. Since June 2026, vertical Dual Format (for all streamers) and 2K streams at 1440p (for Affiliates and Partners) work through Enhanced Broadcasting.

It is enabled in Settings → Stream with the Enhanced Broadcasting checkbox. The mode puts more load on the graphics card than a regular stream, so on mid-range cards check your game for FPS drops before going live.

Video: Resolution, Scaling, FPS

In the Video section there are three main fields.

  • Base (Canvas) Resolution — set it equal to your monitor's resolution, for example 1920×1080 or 2560×1440.
  • Output (Scaled) Resolution — what will be sent to the platform. At 6000 kbps on Twitch this is 1920×1080 for calm games or 1280×720 for fast shooters. With 4–5 Mbps of upload, 1280×720 at 60 FPS is better than a blurry 1080p.
  • Downscale Filter — Lanczos gives the sharpest picture when scaling down, Bicubic is slightly lighter on the graphics card.

Frame rate: 60 for fast-paced games, 30 for strategy games, talk streams and weak internet. YouTube and Kick state a maximum of 60 frames per second in their help pages, so do not go higher on other platforms either.

Audio: Devices, Filters, Monitoring

In Settings → Audio, specify the desktop audio and the microphone. Leave the sample rate at 48 kHz. Disable unused devices.

Filters are added by right-clicking the microphone in the mixer → Filters. Order matters: each filter processes audio already changed by the previous one.

  1. Noise Suppression — RNNoise removes fan hum and hiss. On NVIDIA RTX cards, NVIDIA Noise Removal is available after installing the Broadcast SDK. The filter cannot handle a loud room.
  2. Noise Gate — closes the microphone while you are silent. Set the open threshold slightly above the background noise level and the close threshold 5–8 dB below it.
  3. Compressor — evens out the volume so that shouting and whispering sound closer in level. Start with a ratio of 4:1 and a threshold of around −18 dB.
  4. Limiter — last in the chain, threshold −1…−3 dB. It keeps the sound from clipping when you yelp at a jump scare.

Monitoring lets you hear a source in your headphones. Open Advanced Audio Properties in the mixer and choose Monitor and Output for the source you need. Version 33.0 added hotkeys for this. The monitoring device is set in Settings → Audio.

Scenes and Sources

Build at least three scenes: Game, Be Right Back and Starting Soon. Sources are added with the + button in the Sources dock.

  • Game Capture — the fastest method for fullscreen games, Windows only. Version 33.0 improved fullscreen game detection. Some anti-cheat systems block capture; in that case switch to Window Capture.
  • Window Capture — for windowed games, the browser and apps.
  • Display Capture — the entire monitor. Notifications and private windows will end up on air.
  • Video Capture Device — a webcam. Set its resolution and FPS manually in the properties, otherwise the camera may output 30 frames and make the picture choppy.
  • Browser — a link to alerts and chat from StreamElements, Streamlabs, DonationAlerts. Set the size to match the widget and check Refresh browser when scene becomes active.

Browser sources put a noticeable load on the system. If you have many of them, keep only the necessary ones in the active scene. We have collected plugins that extend OBS in our overview of OBS plugins.

Recording: Hybrid MP4, MKV and Audio Tracks

The file format is chosen on the Recording tab in the Output section. Hybrid MP4 appeared in OBS 30.2, left beta in 32.0 and became the default format for new profiles, and 33.0 improved file splitting. Its main advantage: the file can be recovered if OBS crashed or the power went out, and after a normal stop it opens as a regular MP4 in any editor.

MKV also does not lose the recording on a crash, but many editors cannot open it, so the file has to be remuxed via File → Remux Recordings. If you work in an old version of OBS without Hybrid MP4, record to MKV rather than to regular MP4.

Separate tracks are configured in Advanced Audio Properties: for example, track 1 is the overall sound, 2 is the microphone, 3 is the game, 4 is music. On the Recording tab, check the tracks you need, and during editing you will be able to adjust the voice volume or cut out copyrighted music.

Stats: Dropped, Skipped and Lagged Frames

Open View → Stats and keep the window open during your first streams. The three counters point to three different problems.

CounterWhat it meansWhat to do
Dropped frames (network)Frames did not reach the server because of the internet connectionLower the bitrate, connect with a cable, choose a different server
Skipped frames due to rendering lagThe graphics card cannot compose the scene frame in timeCap the FPS in the game, remove extra browser sources, run OBS as administrator
Missed frames due to encoding lagThe encoder cannot compress frames fast enoughUse a faster preset, lower the output resolution or FPS, switch from x264 to NVENC/AMF

Occasional losses at the start of a stream happen to everyone. If the number keeps growing, the problem is real. To get a log for analysis on the OBS forum: Help → Log Files.

Checklist Before Your First Stream

  • OBS is updated to 33.0, and the graphics card driver is current.
  • The account is connected or the key is pasted, and the key is not visible on screen.
  • Hardware encoder, CBR, keyframes every 2 s, bitrate within the platform's limit.
  • Output resolution and FPS match your upload speed.
  • The microphone has filters, voice level in the mixer is in the yellow zone, and the game is quieter than your voice.
  • The Starting Soon, Game and Be Right Back scenes are built, and alerts and chat are tested with a test donation.
  • A 10–15 minute test recording has been reviewed: audio is in sync and the picture has no stutter.
  • Stats is open and all three counters are near zero.

Once the technical part is ready, the question remains of who will watch your first stream. An empty chat and zero viewers put off random visitors. If you want to start from more than zero, build a plan in the viewer management panel or look at the services for Twitch, and first try the free test.

FAQ

What bitrate should I use for Twitch in 2026?

In standard mode, up to 6000 kbps in H.264: this value is built into the Twitch profile in OBS itself. With Enhanced Broadcasting, Twitch allows up to 7.5 Mbps at 1080p and up to 9 Mbps at 1440p, but the parameters there are chosen automatically.

Can I stream to Twitch in AV1 or HEVC?

HEVC is used only in Enhanced Broadcasting for 1440p; for 1080p and below Twitch uses H.264. Twitch does not mention AV1 in its June 2026 announcement of 2K streams, so do not count on it for Twitch. YouTube accepts AV1 and HEVC without restrictions, while Kick works only with H.264.

Which is better for recording: Hybrid MP4 or MKV?

In OBS 32 and newer, Hybrid MP4: the file survives a crash and opens in editors right away. MKV remains a reliable fallback for older versions, but you will have to remux it before editing.

Why do viewers see stutter when everything is smooth in my game?

Open the stats. If dropped frames are growing, the internet is to blame, so lower the bitrate. If frames are skipped due to rendering or encoding, the graphics card is short on resources: cap the FPS in the game and use a faster preset.
