Why Your YouTube Channel Isn't Growing (Diagnosis)

You shoot videos. You edit all night. You make thumbnails. You upload on schedule. But you have 500 subscribers. And they're not growing. Views are 300, and they're not growing. Comments are 2, and one of them is "cool, subscribe back".

Sound familiar?

Most often, the problem isn't that you're a bad creator. It's that you don't see where the system is breaking down. A YouTube channel is a funnel. At the entrance: title and thumbnail. Next: the first few seconds of the video. Then: retention in the middle. At the end: a call to subscribe.

If your channel isn't growing, one of these stages is broken. This guide provides a step-by-step diagnosis of all the reasons for stalled growth. Go through the points, find your problem, and fix it.

Chapter 1. Diagnosing the "Front Door": Title and Thumbnail

Before a viewer sees your talent, they will see your title and thumbnail. Among dozens of other videos. In 0.5 seconds, they will decide whether to click or not. If they don't click, the video won't get views, even if it's brilliant.

The Main Metric — CTR

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the percentage of people who clicked on a video after seeing it in recommendations or search. Check in YouTube Studio: Analytics → Reach → Impressions CTR.

What CTR is considered bad, and what is good. Below 2% — critically bad. YouTube barely shows the video because viewers aren't clicking. 2–5% — normal for a small channel. You need to work on titles and thumbnails. 5–8% — good. The video grabs attention. 8% and above — excellent. The algorithm loves such videos.

If your CTR is below 3% for several videos, the problem is definitely with your titles and thumbnails.

Typical Title Errors

Error 1. Too general a title. Not "How to cook pasta", but "Pasta Carbonara in 15 Minutes (Cheaper Than a Restaurant)". Error 2. No numbers or benefits. Not "Editing Tips", but "3 Editing Tips That Will Double Your Workflow Speed". Error 3. Clickbait without substance. "I'm shocked by the result!". The viewer clicks, finds nothing shocking, leaves, and no longer trusts you. Error 4. Too long a title (gets cut off on mobile). Keep it to 50–60 characters.

Typical Thumbnail Errors

Error 1. Small, unreadable text. Viewers watch on their phones. Text should be large, bold, and high-contrast. Error 2. Too many details. A thumbnail is not a movie poster. Face (emotion) + large text (3–5 words). That's it. Error 3. No face. Thumbnails with a face are clicked 2-3 times more often. Error 4. Thumbnail doesn't match content. Promised one thing, but delivered another — the viewer leaves and complains.

What to do if CTR is low

Change the title and thumbnail after publishing. Yes, you can do this. YouTube doesn't penalize it. Make 3–5 variations, choose the best one. Test it. If CTR hasn't increased after 2–3 days, change it again. Study the top 10 videos in your niche. Copy the structure of their titles and thumbnails (not the content, but the structure). Don't use words like "lesson", "tips", "tutorial" — they lower CTR. Replace them with "life hack", "secret", "method", "mistake".

Chapter 2. Diagnosing Retention: Why Viewers Leave in the First 30 Seconds

CTR is high. People are clicking. But views are low. This means viewers are leaving in the first few seconds.

Retention Graph — An X-ray of Your Video

Check in YouTube Studio: Analytics → Engagement → Audience retention. You will see a graph showing at what second viewers leave. A sharp drop in the first 30 seconds indicates a problem at the beginning of the video. A gradual decline in the middle indicates a problem with the script or pacing. A high percentage at the end is good, viewers are watching until the end.

Typical Errors at the Beginning of a Video

Error 1. Greetings and introductions. "Hello, my name is...". The viewer has left. Start with a hook. Error 2. "Today I will tell you about...". This is a plan, not an interest. Show the most exciting part immediately. Error 3. Long intro. A 10-second intro with a logo and music is a sure way to lose 50% of viewers. Error 4. "Subscribe and like" at the beginning. No one will subscribe without seeing value.

What an Ideal Start Should Look Like

0–5 seconds — a hook. A question, intrigue, unexpected action, strong emotion. Example: "Want to know how I increased my views from 100 to 10,000? Watch closely."

5–20 seconds — promise of value. What the viewer will gain from watching. Example: "In this video, I'll show you 3 OBS setup mistakes that kill your audio. You're definitely making the first one."

20–30 seconds — proof. Why you should be trusted. Example: a screenshot of statistics, a reference to a previous video, a demonstration of results.

What to do if retention drops at the beginning

Re-shoot the first 30 seconds. Start not with a greeting, but with a hook. Cut out the intro and introduction. Move the call to subscribe to the middle or end. Check the quality of the sound and picture at the beginning of the video. Bad sound kills retention instantly.

Chapter 3. Diagnosing the Middle of the Video: Why Viewers Leave After 1-2 Minutes

The viewer got past the beginning. They're interested. But at the 2nd or 3rd minute, the graph drops sharply. This is a script problem.

Typical Errors in the Middle of a Video

Error 1. Filler. You say the same thing in different words, repeat yourself, drag out time. The viewer senses it and leaves. Error 2. No change in visuals. A talking head on a static background for 5 minutes straight. Error 3. Monotonous voice. No emotion, no intonation, no pauses. Error 4. No promise of a bonus at the end. The viewer has no reason to endure the middle.

How to Maintain Attention in the Middle

Change the shot every 30–60 seconds. Insert B-roll (additional footage), screenshots, text on screen. Add unexpected transitions: "And now, pay attention — the most important thing." Promise a bonus at the end: "Stay until the end, I'll show you a checklist to download." Ask questions: "What do you think will happen next? Write in the comments."
