Why the YouTube stream recording was saved without chat replay

Why there is no chat replay on the YouTube stream recording

Why the video was saved but the chat disappeared

A broadcast recording and the viewers' chat on YouTube are not the same thing. The video file contains the picture and sound, while chat messages are stored separately and shown on the page of the original archive. That's why the finished video may open normally even if there is no chat replay next to it.

The most common reason is not a fault in the archive but the way it was published. If you recorded the stream in OBS and then uploaded the resulting file as a regular video, YouTube never received a message stream as part of a live broadcast. Such a file simply has no data for chat replay to begin with.

Another situation arises when OBS did send the stream to YouTube through the "Live" section, but the archive is still being processed, the chat was disabled, or the recording was later replaced with a new publication. First you need to determine how the video came to be, and only then check the settings.

The most common reason: OBS was used only for recording

OBS can not only send a broadcast to the platform but also save the picture and sound locally. If you clicked "Start Recording," got a file on your computer, and then uploaded it through the regular video upload form, YouTube treats it as a standard video. It is not tied to a live broadcast and has no chat replay.

The same applies when the broadcast was not started through YouTube's "Live" but a finished file was simply sent to the channel. Even if the video shows messages you overlaid on the picture in OBS, that is already part of the image. YouTube cannot turn them into a separate interactive chat.

You can check the publication type in YouTube Studio. Open the "Content" section and compare the "Streams" and regular video lists. A live archive belongs to streams and usually contains information about the event, when it took place, and the chat settings. An uploaded file sits among regular videos and does not become an archive just because it was recorded during a stream.

In the future, start your broadcast by creating or setting up a live stream on YouTube, and connect OBS to that event as the program for sending picture and sound. If you only need a local video without viewer interaction, regular recording in OBS works, but such a file will not have chat replay.

Make sure you're opening the original archive

Chat replay is only available on the original live stream page. A downloaded MP4 file, a re-uploaded video, and a copy on another channel may be completely identical to the original in content, but the link to the chat does not carry over to them.

Don't confuse chat replay with comments under the video. Comments are left by viewers after the video is published, while live stream messages appear during the broadcast. Comments may discuss the same stream, but they do not replace the missing chat.

The problem can also occur in an embedded player. A third-party site may show only the video while hiding the sidebar or other elements of the YouTube page. Open the video directly on YouTube through the channel or YouTube Studio. If the chat is there on the original page, the issue was in how you were viewing it.

If the block is missing, try another browser or incognito mode. Extensions, script blockers, and temporary page loading errors sometimes hide individual elements of the archive. Before checking, disable extensions that alter YouTube's appearance or block its scripts.

Check the Live chat replay setting

During the broadcast, viewers could write messages freely, but after it ended, chat replay may have been disabled. The ability to send messages in a live stream and their display in the archive are controlled by different settings. The presence of chat during the broadcast does not by itself prove it will be available after it ends.

Open YouTube Studio, go to "Content" → "Streams," and select the archive you need. In the stream card, find the Live chat replay item, which in the Russian version may be called "Повтор чата." In different interface versions, it may be located in the details, advanced settings, or stream parameters.

If the toggle is available and turned off, check whether you can change it for this recording. YouTube does not offer the same set of actions for every archive, so enabling the setting is not always possible after the broadcast ends. Even when the parameter is changed, it may take time for the page to update.

Also check whether chat was enabled at all and whether anyone sent messages. If viewers wrote nothing, the replay may appear empty. If chat was restricted to subscribers, channel members, or users with other conditions, only messages from those who met those rules will be preserved.

The archive may still be processing

Right after a broadcast ends, YouTube may show the finished video before all its associated elements. The recording and chat data are processed separately, so the absence of chat in the first minutes or hours does not always mean it is permanently lost.

Open YouTube Studio and check not only the video's availability but also its status. Pay attention to notifications about errors, incomplete processing, restrictions, and actions that require confirmation. If the broadcast ended recently, refresh the page later and don't delete the archive just because the chat is temporarily missing.

Don't rush to download the video and re-upload it. A new publication will become a regular video and will not create chat retroactively. Re-uploading may preserve the video but will not restore the link to the original broadcast.

For long broadcasts, additionally check whether the recording was saved partially. If the beginning or end is missing, the archive was formed with an error, or other signs of incomplete saving appear, the problem may not be related only to the chat setting.

YouTube restrictions and changes after the broadcast

Check the audience settings. For content marked as made for kids, some interactive features may be unavailable. Look at what designation the recording has and whether it changed automatically or manually.

Then open the channel notifications and the stream details. Feature restrictions, moderation actions, warnings, and other YouTube measures can affect chat availability. If the platform applied a restriction, additional messages about its status usually appear next to the archive.

A separate portion of messages may have disappeared due to moderation. The channel owner or a moderator could have deleted them, and YouTube could have hidden posts that violate the rules, look like spam, or were sent multiple times. If only part of the chat is missing, it is more often related to individual messages being deleted rather than the entire replay disappearing.

Check whether you edited the archive after the broadcast ended. Trimming, changing parameters, deleting the original publication, and re-uploading the file can affect the available elements of the recording. If the video was replaced with a copy under a new URL, title, or thumbnail, that is already a different publication without the previous chat.

Chat replay is not saved inside the MP4

When you download a video, YouTube saves the picture and sound. Viewer messages do not become subtitles, an additional audio track, or part of the video frame. That's why the chat will not appear in the MP4, even if it was displayed next to the video in the online archive.

If you displayed the chat over the broadcast through OBS, the situation is different: those messages were already captured in the video frame. But that is not separate YouTube data. After downloading, they cannot be hidden or viewed by timecode like a regular replay, and the text may be unreadable due to the window size or recording quality.

The original chat cannot be reliably extracted from a finished video. If messages are visible on screen, you can try to recognize them frame by frame, but that will be manual image processing, not restoring the history. Messages that were deleted, hidden, or never captured in the frame cannot be recovered this way.

How to preserve chat for future broadcasts

For future broadcasts, use two sources: YouTube chat replay and a separate save of the messages. Set up the live stream through YouTube, check Live chat replay before the broadcast begins, and make sure OBS is connected specifically to the live event rather than being used only as a recorder.

Additionally, you can use bots and chat capture tools, such as Streamlabs Chatbot or Live Chat Capture. Depending on the version and settings, they can save messages to a log, a file, or another separate source. Such an archive will come in handy if YouTube replay fails to load, chat is restricted, or you want to add the chat to an edit.

Verify that the chosen tool actually saves messages and doesn't just display them on screen. Run a short test broadcast, send a few messages from different accounts, and make sure the log is created and is not cleared after the program closes. Take into account account access, privacy settings, and the limitations of the specific service.

Another option is to record the screen area with the chat on a separate track or take snapshots of important fragments. This does not create an interactive replay but lets you keep a visual copy of the chat. For regular broadcasts, a separate log is usually more convenient because messages can be searched and used without watching the entire recording.

Can a disappeared chat be restored

If the cause is incomplete processing or a display error, the replay may appear later. Open the original archive on YouTube, check its status in Studio, refresh the page, and check again in another browser.

If Live chat replay was turned off and YouTube allows the setting to be changed, try enabling it in the archive parameters and wait for it to update. The possibility depends on the state of the specific broadcast and the platform's current interface. Don't count on recovery if the original chat was not recorded.

When the video was uploaded as a regular file, the archive was deleted, the video was replaced with a copy, or messages were deleted, the chat cannot be restored from the MP4. In that case, only separate data will help: a bot log, a screen recording, moderation logs, or another source that was running during the broadcast.

What to do step by step

  1. Determine whether the video was a live stream archive or a regular video uploaded after recording in OBS.
  2. Open the original publication page directly on YouTube, not a downloaded file, a copy, or an embedded player.
  3. In YouTube Studio, go to "Content" → "Streams" and check the Live chat replay parameter.
  4. Make sure processing is complete and there are no warnings, restrictions, or errors in Studio.
  5. Check whether chat was enabled, whether messages were sent, and whether moderators or the platform deleted them.
  6. If you need chat in the future, start the broadcast through YouTube's "Live" and additionally connect a tool like Streamlabs Chatbot or Live Chat Capture.
  7. If there is no source data, the chat cannot be restored from the finished video.
