How to Track Stream Visits from Telegram and VK Using UTM Tags
Why UTM Tags Are Needed for a Stream Announcement
A UTM tag is a set of parameters at the end of a link. It passes information to the analytics system about where the visitor came from: Telegram, VK, a specific post, or an ad placement. For the viewer, such a link leads to the same page as a regular one, but it helps separate traffic sources.
Without tagging, you'll see total traffic to the stream page. At the same time, it will be hard to understand how many visits came from a Telegram post, how many from a VK post, and how many users came via an old link. UTM parameters add clear identifiers to these visits.
Tags do not show the stream views themselves and do not replace the streaming platform's statistics. They record the visit to the page the link leads to. If a viewer opens the streaming app directly, data about subsequent viewing may not be available in your web analytics.
Which Parameters to Add to the Link
For announcements, three required parameters are usually enough: utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. The first indicates the platform, the second the channel type, and the third the overall campaign or the specific occasion for promotion.
For Telegram, you can use the value telegram as the source, and for VK — vk. For organic posts on both networks, it's convenient to choose a single value social in the utm_medium parameter. Then the platforms will differ by source, while the traffic type remains the same. For paid placement, use a separate pre-agreed value.
The utm_content parameter comes in handy if you place several links within one announcement. For example, you can distinguish a regular post, a pinned post, and a story. utm_term is more often used for keywords in advertising, so it's not needed for a standard stream announcement.
It's best to write values in Latin characters, in lowercase, and without spaces. Use one naming principle: for example, stream_anons, post, story. The system may show VK, vk, and vkontakte as different sources.
How to Build a Tagged Link
Start with the regular address of the page viewers should land on. This could be a page describing the broadcast with a button to go to the stream, a schedule, or another suitable section. After the address, add a question mark and the parameters, separating them with an ampersand.
Example link for a Telegram post:
https://example.com/stream?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=stream_anons&utm_content=post
For VK, change the source and, if needed, the placement format:
https://example.com/stream?utm_source=vk&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=stream_anons&utm_content=post
In the examples, the domain should be replaced with your page's address. If the original link already has parameters after the question mark, add new ones with an ampersand, not a second question mark. In HTML, the ampersand is written as &, but in the link itself the user should receive the regular character &.
How to Tag Announcements on Telegram and VK
For the two platforms, you can keep the same campaign and change only the source. This way you'll see the overall announcement result and compare Telegram with VK separately. If there are several posts on one network, add different utm_content values to the links.
For example, a link in a Telegram post might have the parameters utm_source=telegram and utm_content=channel_post, while a link in a VK post might have utm_source=vk and utm_content=group_post. The names don't have to be exactly these. What matters is that you understand their meaning in advance and apply consistent rules.
Don't manually change a tagged link after publication. Removing a single parameter or accidentally replacing a value will worsen data comparison. If the same announcement goes out in several formats, create a separate link for each format, even when they all lead to the same page.
A long address can be used as a link within text or a button if the platform allows it. When using a shortener, check that it preserves UTM parameters and doesn't replace the destination address without your control.

How to Check a Link Before Publishing
First, open each link variant in a regular browser. Make sure the page loads, the button to go to the stream works, and the address doesn't lose its parameters after opening. Some redirects may strip part of the string, so you need to check the final result specifically.
Then find the traffic sources report in your analytics system. Section names depend on the tool you use, but usually data can be viewed by source, channel, campaign, and link content. Check that the test visit appeared with the correct values.
Don't draw conclusions from a single random opening. Data display can be affected by processing delays, browser privacy settings, blockers, and user consent to analytics collection. That's why UTM tags help compare traffic but don't provide absolutely complete tracking of all visits.
Mistakes That Make Data Useless
A common mistake is using different names for one source: telegram, Telegram, tg. Analytics may split them into several rows, and the total result will have to be compiled manually. Create a simple rule and stick to it across all announcements.
Don't put personal data, usernames, email addresses, or internal customer identifiers into parameters. A UTM link may appear in the address bar, browser history, and reports, so tags should contain only technical campaign designations.
Another problem is adding UTM tags to all internal links on a page. If a visitor navigates from a tagged page to another page of the site via a new UTM link, the original data may be overwritten. For an announcement, tag the incoming link and leave internal navigation without these parameters.
Also watch the placement of parameters. They should come after the main address, and the fragment after the hash symbol is usually placed after the entire string with UTM. After each edit, re-check the link and the destination page.
How to Evaluate Announcement Results
Compare not only the number of visits but also the actions after them. For a stream page, these could be clicks on the go-to button, reminder sign-ups, or another event you've set up in analytics. If only visits are tracked, you'll know the traffic source but won't understand how many users reached the desired action.
Compare links with similar conditions: similar announcement text, one landing page, and close publication times. Otherwise, the result will be influenced not only by Telegram and VK but also by differences in post content, audience size, and timing.
If there are many visits but few target actions, check the page after the click, the clarity of the call to action, and whether the announcement matches the stream content. If data is scarce across all sources, first make sure analytics is installed and parameters aren't lost during redirects.
Quick Takeaways: What to Do Step by Step
- Choose the page you'll direct viewers to and check it.
- Agree on names for utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and, if needed, utm_content.
- Create a separate link for Telegram and VK, then check it after opening.
- Publish the announcements and review visits, actions, and differences between sources in analytics.
