Masha Way: Silent Millions

In an era where YouTube bloggers compete in loudness, editing speed, and the number of special effects, there is a phenomenon that breaks all the rules. Masha Way is one of the most enigmatic figures on Russian-language YouTube. At the peak of her popularity, she had 4.12 million subscribers and 171.4 million views on her channel. And then she just... disappeared.

Since 2019, Masha Way has stopped releasing videos on YouTube. No grand goodbyes, no scandals. Silence. Minimalism. But her channel continues to live on, new viewers find old videos, and Masha Way's name still sparks debate and admiration.

How did a girl who started with makeup tutorials on an old camera become an idol for millions? Why is her channel still remembered and loved? And where is she now? Let's find out.

Who is Masha Way: From Tambov Schoolgirl to YouTube Star

Real Name and Early Years

Masha Way is a pseudonym. The blogger's real name is Maria Olegovna Vysotina (in some sources, Kerimova). She was born on December 3, 1992 (according to other data, 1993) in Tambov.

Her childhood was far from the world of glamour and blogs. Masha's grandmother was a teacher of Russian language and literature, and the girl loved to read from childhood. She danced, played electric guitar, and was fond of heavy rock – her idols were Nirvana and 30 Seconds to Mars. Her family moved to Moscow during her school years.

In high school, Masha became interested in philosophy, participated in olympiads, and won prizes. She had ambitions, but the path to success was unclear.

The Path to Blogging

After school, Masha entered the faculty of economics – at the insistence of her mother, who wanted a "normal" profession for her daughter. But economics was not her calling.

"At that time, I wasn't doing what I wanted. I went to study economics, and I couldn't understand why nothing was working out for me. Before that, in school, I was interested, it was easy, I studied well. But in economics, I literally forced myself to study."

She tried herself in different fields: drawing, making jewelry, looking for something that would ignite her. And one day, she saw an American girl on the internet who was filming makeup videos. "I wanted to try the same," Masha recalls.

This was in 2012. iPhones didn't exist yet. Masha borrowed a friend's camera, which only filmed for a minute at a time. But even that was a miracle for her – to do something herself and see the result. She really enjoyed editing, choosing pictures and music.

Masha Way's first video was about how to properly apply false eyelashes. The MWaytv channel was registered on April 3, 2012.

Difficulties at the Start

Her family did not support Masha's hobby. She lived with her mother and grandmother, and both were categorically against "this nonsense."

"My grandmother still calls me sometimes and says: 'I know you're not sleeping, you're sitting there editing'," Masha said in an interview.

But the girl stubbornly continued. For a year and a half, she filmed videos for free, not earning a penny. The first earnings came a year and a half after the start – 8 thousand rubles for an advertisement for some application.

"I was shocked. They transferred money to me for what I had done. But the most important thing was that I showed my mother: you can earn money with this. These were a kind of 'buyout,' which gave me the right to film a little more."

Career Boom: How Masha Way Became a Star

Key Achievements

By 2015, Masha's YouTube channel had about 1 million subscribers. In June 2015, she received the "Like" award in the "Like for Beauty" nomination at the "Vidfest" festival.

In 2016, YouTube included Masha Way in the list of the most influential female bloggers in Russia. She took third place on this list – after Katya Clap and Estonianna, but before Agnia Ogonyok and Mari Senn. At that time, 2.5 million people were subscribed to her channel.

In the same year, Masha was nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in the "Favorite Russian Video Blogger" category – along with Sonya Yesman, TheBrianMaps, and Katya Clap.

Content Format: What's the Secret?

At first glance, Masha Way's channel is a typical beauty blog. Makeup tutorials, cosmetic reviews, beauty tips. But there's a nuance.

Masha didn't just show how to put on eye makeup. She transformed makeup into the art of transformation. In her videos, you could see how, with the help of cosmetics, she became Rihanna, Johnny Depp, Cara Delevingne, Lana Del Rey, Kim Kardashian, and other stars.

She is convinced: "Beauty is our main weapon." And this philosophy resonated with millions of girls.

In a 2017 interview, Masha described her typical fan:

"My typical fan is a girl who dreams. Many things inspire her, she wants to do something beautiful, and not just in terms of makeup, but in terms of everything: art, music, home decor, and so on."

The Secret to Success According to Masha Way

In an interview with REN TV, journalists asked Masha about the secret of her insane popularity. She replied:

"There is one main secret for any blogger – regularity. Please the people who follow you more often, be their mini-series, so that they want to watch you again and again. I don't often upload videos, but I post photos every day. People are really interested, so you can bother your subscribers with news about you."

Later, in an interview with TOPBEAUTY magazine, she added:

"The secret to success is very simple. You just have to do it. Sometimes even think less and do more. I often see people spend most of their day planning and thinking, but they're afraid to do anything. So just go and do it."

Working for Results and Perfectionism

Masha admits that she is a perfectionist. And this is a quality that both helps and hinders.
