RUTUBE Hashtags: How to Use Them Correctly for Your Channel
Why Hashtags Matter on RUTUBE
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the pound sign, such as #stream or #gamereview. It helps label the topic of a post and link a video to similar content. If the platform recognizes the entry as a hashtag, viewers can click on it and browse other posts with the same label.
For creators, hashtags serve as additional content description. They show what a video is about, in what format it's made, and who might be interested in it. This is especially useful for new channels that don't yet have many regular viewers or accumulated statistics.
That said, hashtags don't replace a clear title, thumbnail, or good content. They don't guarantee views and don't turn a random set of words into promotion. Their job is to clarify the topic of a post, not to compensate for weak presentation.
Hashtags, Tags, and Keywords: What's the Difference
These terms are often confused, though they work differently. A hashtag is visible to the user in the description or title and starts with the # sign. A keyword phrase can be plain text: "how to set up stream audio." Individual tags, if the corresponding field exists in the upload form, are added in the video settings and aren't necessarily displayed in the description.
A single piece of content can be described using all three methods:
- in the title, state the exact topic: "How to Set Up a Microphone for Streaming";
- in the description, explain the content using plain phrases;
- add a few hashtags: #stream #microphone #streamsetup.
Don't turn every paragraph of the description into a list of keywords. The text should remain clear to the viewer. Search phrases are best woven in naturally, with hashtags separated from the main description.
How to Choose Hashtags for a Video
Start with the topic of the specific post. Not the channel name, and not the most popular words, but what the viewer will actually see in the video. Use several levels when selecting hashtags:
- broad topic — #gaming, #music, #makeup;
- format — #stream, #review, #tutorial, #livestream;
- narrow topic — #streamsetup, #newrelease, #makeupforbeginners.
Combining different phrasings describes the content more precisely than a set of only general words. For a gaming stream, hashtags with the game name, genre, and broadcast format work well. For an educational video — with the skill topic, skill level, and lesson type.
Check that each phrase matches the video. If there's no makeup in the video, don't add #makeup for potential reach. Such a hashtag may bring the wrong audience, and viewers will quickly realize the post doesn't meet their expectations.
How to Write Hashtags Correctly
Hashtags contain no spaces. If a phrase has multiple words, they're combined: #makeuptutorials or #streamsetup. The # sign goes before the entire phrase, not before each word. Use clear spellings and check that the meaning hasn't changed after combining the words.
A hashtag usually ends at a space or punctuation mark. Don't add quotation marks, parentheses, or extra symbols inside it. Overly long and complex constructions are hard to read and easy to misspell.
For a Russian-language channel, it makes sense to use Russian phrasings. English spelling is appropriate if your audience uses it or if it's tied to a game title, program, genre, or another specific topic. There's no need to mix several variants of the same word in every post.
Before publishing, open the description and check whether the text has turned into a working hashtag. If the entry displays as plain text, don't try to compensate with dozens of duplicate variants.

Where to Add Hashtags on RUTUBE
The main place for hashtags is the video description. First write a short description of the content, add important links and a call to action, then place the hashtags on a separate line or in a small block. This makes them easier to spot and check.
You should only add a hashtag to the title when it doesn't interfere with reading and is genuinely part of the title. A title like "#stream #gaming #livestream" doesn't explain what the viewer will see. It's better to write the broadcast topic and leave the hashtags in the description.
For live streams, the principle is the same. State the game or topic, the broadcast format, and the episode's features, then add related hashtags. If you turn the stream into a separate video afterward, check the description again: the final content may differ from the original announcement.
If RUTUBE's upload form has a separate field for tags, fill it with thematic words without automatically duplicating the entire hashtag list. Interface features may change, so rely on the available fields and prompts when publishing.
How Many Hashtags to Add
There's no universal number that works for every channel. The list should be sufficient to describe the topic but shouldn't turn into spam. Focus on the meaning of the post: if a video can be accurately described with a few hashtags, don't add dozens more similar words.
Before publishing, divide your chosen variants into three groups:
- the main topic of the video;
- the format or type of content;
- a narrow detail by which viewers might search for the content.
Keep the most precise phrasings from each group. Remove duplicate variants, general words unrelated to the video, and hashtags used only to pad the list. Relevance to the topic matters more than the length of the block.
Using the same set under every video doesn't work either. The channel name can be repeated, but change the thematic hashtags along with the content of the post.
Examples of Hashtags for Different Posts
For a gaming stream, you can use the game name, genre, and format: #stream #livestream #gaming #playthrough. If the video is about setting up a broadcast, the set should change: #streamsetup #microphone #sound #streaming.
For an educational video, hashtags with the skill and difficulty level work well: #makeuptutorials #makeupforbeginners #beauty. For a tech review — #techreview #gadgets #comparison. For an interview — #interview #podcast #talk.
Don't copy these examples unchanged. Pick the words that describe your specific episode. If the video covers headphone sound, don't add a hashtag about a microphone just because both devices relate to streaming.
Also consider seasonal and event-based phrasings. They're useful when a post is genuinely tied to an event, holiday, or timely topic. Once the relevant period ends, don't carry such hashtags over into regular videos.
Mistakes When Using Hashtags
- Adding popular words that aren't related to the video.
- Repeating the same hashtag many times in the description.
- Putting the # sign before each word instead of one whole phrase.
- Using long chains that can't be read quickly.
- Copying the same list under every post on the channel.
- Writing hashtags with mistakes and not checking how they display.
- Replacing a proper title and description with hashtags.
A separate mistake is judging the benefit by a single video. Results are influenced by the topic, title, thumbnail, publishing time, audience interest, and the quality of the content itself. Compare several similar episodes and change only one element at a time. This will make it easier to understand what actually affected the metrics.
Look at the available channel statistics, click-throughs on posts, and viewer reactions. If videos with narrow and precise hashtags get more relevant comments or bring in engaged viewers, keep that principle. If there's no change, revisit the topic, presentation, and description rather than just expanding the hashtag list.
Quick Plan: What to Do Step by Step
- Identify the main topic of the specific video or stream.
- Choose hashtags for the topic, format, and a narrow detail.
- Check the spelling, absence of spaces, and relevance to the content.
- Add them to the description as a separate block without overloading the title.
- After publishing, compare similar content and adjust the set.
