IRL streaming in 2026: backpack, internet and bonding for streaming outdoors

IRL streaming in 2026: what you need to go live outdoors - backpack, internet, bonding

For IRL streaming in 2026, a smartphone and your platform's app are enough: Twitch and YouTube let you go live straight from their own apps, and Kick has a separate app for it, KICK - Go Live, for iPhone and Android. From there the setup grows with your needs: an external modem and a power bank for long walks, bonding (sending data over several SIM cards and Wi-Fi at once) for trips, concerts and places with weak coverage. At any level it is worth adding a lavalier mic with a windscreen and a backup plan in case the network drops.

Three setup levels

You do not need to buy a modem backpack right away. Start with a phone and add only what you actually missed on previous streams.

LevelWhat is includedWhen it fits
1. Phone + appSmartphone, the platform's built-in app or Moblin / IRL Pro, power bankFirst IRL streams, walks around your own city, short broadcasts of up to a couple of hours
2. Phone + modem + powerPhone, mobile router with a second SIM, lavalier mic, gimbal, high-capacity power bankLong streams, places where one carrier's signal is weak
3. BondingEncoder (LiveU Solo PRO or BELABOX) or a phone with SRTLA, 2-4 modems from different carriers, SRT server, cameraTravel, crowded events, streaming on the move, when a dropped stream costs you money and viewers

We covered how much upload speed different quality levels need in the article on what internet speed you need for streaming. For outdoors, a realistic goal is 720p30 at a 2.5-4 Mbps bitrate with headroom on upload: mobile networks fluctuate more than home internet.

Apps for streaming from your phone

Built-in apps are the simplest: log in and tap the go-live button, with no keys or servers. Third-party apps give you more control over bitrate, protocols and scenes.

AppPlatformWhat it does
TwitchiOS, AndroidGo live right from the app, no stream key
YouTubeiOS, AndroidMobile streaming from 50 subscribers, the channel must be verified; for channels under 1,000 subscribers the mobile stream audience may be limited
KICK - Go LiveiOS 18+, Android 8.0+Streaming without a key, filming with the front and rear cameras at the same time, screen sharing
MobliniPhone, iPad (iOS 16.4+)Free open-source app: SRT, SRTLA, RIST, RTMP(S), up to 4K60 in HEVC, adaptive bitrate, bonding of cellular, Wi-Fi and Ethernet
IRL ProAndroidStreaming to Twitch, YouTube and other platforms, bonding through SRTLA servers
PRISM Live StudioiOS (16+), Android (10+)Twitch, YouTube and your own RTMP address; multistreaming to up to 6 channels with a PRISM Plus subscription

VK Video Live is a different story. In VK's official materials, a stream is started through the "Studio": you copy the server URL and stream key and paste them into your streaming software. The VK Video Live mobile app is described as an app for watching and chatting, and starting a stream in it is not mentioned. So to stream to VK Video Live from a phone, people use an app that supports a custom RTMP address, for example PRISM Live Studio. Do not show your key to anyone: VK explicitly warns that a leaked key can get your channel blocked.

What bonding is and when you need it

Bonding combines several internet connections into one. The video stream is split into packets that travel at the same time over two to four SIM cards from different carriers, Wi-Fi and a wired network, and are reassembled on a server. If one carrier sags in the subway or in a crowd, the others pick up the slack and viewers do not see a drop.

Bonding needs a receiver on the other end: a cloud SRT/SRTLA server (relay). It accepts the stream from several connections, stitches it together and passes it to OBS or straight to the platform. You can also keep a "be right back" scene on the server that switches on if the camera disappears completely - Twitch itself gives this advice in its IRL guide.

Bonding options

  • LiveU Solo PRO is a ready-made hardware encoder. According to the manufacturer's brochure, it combines up to six connections: four external 4G/5G modems, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. It takes the camera signal over HDMI 2.0 (an SDI version exists), encodes in H.264 and H.265 up to 4Kp60, runs for about three hours on its built-in battery and is powered over USB-C from an external battery with Power Delivery of 45 W or more. It sends the stream to Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and any RTMP(S) address.
  • BELABOX is open-source software (GPL-3.0 and AGPL-3.0 licenses) that turns a single-board computer into an encoder for streaming over 3G/4G/5G. Supported boards are based on Rockchip RK3588 (Orange Pi 5 Plus, Radxa Rock 5A/5B/5B+) and NVIDIA Jetson Nano. It offers H.265 encoding, dynamic bitrate and bonding of several modems. The software is free and the project lives on donations; BELABOX cloud relays start at 10 dollars a month, but they have no servers in Russia, the nearest ones are in Europe.
  • Phone with SRTLA - Moblin on iPhone and IRL Pro on Android can bond on their own: the phone uses cellular and Wi-Fi at the same time (for example, a hotspot from a router on another SIM). This is the cheapest way into bonding, and all you need is a receiving server.

If one carrier in your city reliably holds 10 Mbps of upload, bonding is not required. It pays off where a drop is expensive: a concert, a festival, a highway, another country.

Internet: carriers, SIM cards and roaming

The main IRL rule is several carriers. Two SIMs from the same carrier use the same towers and sag together. Before a stream, walk the route or at least test upload speed at key points, not in your apartment.

  • Plan. An hour of streaming at 4 Mbps is about 1.8 GB of data. For regular streams you need an unlimited plan or a big data bundle, and check whether the carrier throttles tethering speed to a modem or router.
  • Roaming. Abroad, roaming on Russian SIMs is usually expensive, so on trips streamers buy local SIM cards or eSIMs from several carriers in the country.
  • Returning to Russia. Since November 2025 there has been a "cooling-off period": if a SIM card was roaming or inactive for more than 72 hours, mobile internet and SMS are switched off for 24 hours. Calls work, and the restriction is lifted earlier if you solve a captcha at the link in the carrier's SMS or verify your identity through the call center. If you plan to stream right after landing, do this in advance.
  • Restrictions in the regions. In 2026, in some regions of Russia, mobile internet periodically works in "whitelist" mode: only sites and services from the Ministry of Digital Development list are available. According to the company Vigo, in July 2026 only about a third of mobile sessions in the Central Federal District ran without restrictions, and about 12% in border regions. Whether the platform you need is on the list depends on the region and the moment. Before an IRL stream in another city, check how connectivity works there and keep a fallback: cafe or hotel Wi-Fi, or wired internet at the event venue.

Power: power banks and airplanes

A phone that films, encodes and sends video to the network drains quickly, and even faster in the cold. A power bank is a must even in the simplest setup.

How to calculate capacity

Capacity in watt-hours is voltage x amp-hours. Power banks are usually labeled in milliamp-hours at a cell voltage of 3.6-3.7 V. So 10,000 mAh is about 37 Wh, 20,000 mAh is about 74 Wh, and 27,000 mAh is about 100 Wh. How many hours of streaming a power bank gives depends on the phone, screen brightness and temperature, so measure it in practice: do a one-hour test stream and see how many percent were used. LiveU Solo PRO needs a battery with USB-C Power Delivery of 45 W or more.

Rules for carrying them on a plane

Updated ICAO rules have applied since March 27, 2026, and IATA has sent clarifications to airlines:

  • power banks go in carry-on only, they cannot be checked in;
  • no more than two power banks per person;
  • up to 100 Wh needs no approval; batteries of 100-160 Wh need airline permission, and for power banks of that capacity the ICAO rules are even stricter; more than 160 Wh is not allowed in the cabin;
  • you may not charge the power bank itself on board, charging a phone from it is not recommended, and many carriers explicitly forbid it;
  • protect each battery against short circuits: factory packaging, taped contacts or a separate pouch.

Since May 2026, Aeroflot has banned power banks in checked baggage, allows no more than two in carry-on, forbids putting them in overhead bins and charging gadgets from them in flight. Individual airlines' rules can be stricter than the general ones, so check your carrier's website before flying.

Audio and stabilization

Viewers will forgive a soft picture, but not wind noise and unintelligible speech. A phone's built-in mic picks up traffic and crowd noise outdoors, and the streamer's voice drowns.

  • Lavalier mic. A wireless lavalier system with a receiver for the phone is the best option for IRL: the mic is near your mouth and your hands are free. Rode and Deity systems are a popular choice.
  • Windscreen. Outdoors a furry "deadcat" on the mic is a must: a foam cap barely helps against wind.
  • Gimbal. An electronic phone stabilizer removes shake while walking. Built-in stabilization on the phone and in apps like Moblin helps, but on a long walk a gimbal gives a noticeably smoother picture. Pick a model that does not block the charging port.

Platform rules and safety

IRL streaming always means strangers in the frame. Twitch's guide for IRL streamers advises: learn local laws before a trip, keep the camera focused on yourself rather than passersby, ask permission in private places (a store, a restaurant, someone's home), keep the camera's field of view in mind and do not show license plates, bank cards or signs of your home address.

What you may film in public places under Russian law and when a person's consent is needed is covered in our article on streaming in public places: law and rights. Other countries have their own rules, sometimes stricter than Russian ones, so check local laws on filming people before a trip.

  • Do not show your location in real time if you do not want uninvited guests: add a stream delay or do not name your exact address.
  • Be ready to quickly mute the audio or video if a situation turns unpleasant.
  • Do not stream while driving: it is dangerous for you and for others.

Why this format is growing so fast and what hooks viewers, read in the piece on why IRL streams are gaining popularity.

How to get your first IRL viewers

A new IRL channel often runs into an empty chat rather than a gear problem: on a walk with no viewers there is nobody to talk to, and the stream turns into a monologue. To make the channel look alive from the first minutes and rank higher in the category directory, you can bring in viewers through our viewer control panel: you choose the platform, the number of viewers and the duration yourself, and you can start with a small plan to test the format.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stream IRL from just a phone?

Yes. Twitch and YouTube let you go live from their apps, and Kick has KICK - Go Live for iPhone and Android. A phone, a power bank and an inexpensive lavalier mic are enough to start. Modems and bonding are needed when one carrier's signal can no longer cope.

How is Moblin different from IRL Pro?

Moblin is a free open-source app for iPhone and iPad: SRT, SRTLA, RIST, RTMP, HEVC and bonding. IRL Pro runs on Android and also supports bonding through SRTLA servers. The choice is essentially decided by your phone.

Do you need a server for bonding?

Yes. A stream split across several connections has to be reassembled somewhere. For that you use a cloud SRT/SRTLA relay - a BELABOX or LiveU service, or your own server. Without a receiver, bonding does not work.

How many power banks can you take on a plane?

Under ICAO rules since March 27, 2026: no more than two, in carry-on only, up to 100 Wh without approval. You cannot charge the power bank on board, and many airlines, including Aeroflot, also forbid charging a phone from it.

Why does mobile internet not work after a trip?

Most likely the "cooling-off period" kicked in: after roaming or 72 hours of inactivity, mobile internet and SMS are switched off for a day. Solve the captcha at the link in the carrier's SMS and the connection returns within a few minutes.

Can you film passersby on an IRL stream?

It depends on the situation and the country. Platforms ask you to keep the focus on yourself rather than passersby and to ask permission in private places. What Russian law says is covered in our article on streaming in public places.
