Why add timestamps to a stream VOD

A long stream VOD is rarely watched from start to finish. Viewers come for a specific match, analysis, a game with subscribers, or answers from chat. Timestamps break the video into clear segments and help jump straight to the moment they need.

On YouTube, such markers can appear as chapters: the playback bar splits into parts, and section titles are visible in the player and below the video. This is especially useful for a broadcast if it included different games, segments, a technical pause, or several major events.

Where to edit timestamps after a stream

Timestamps are added to the description of an already published VOD. There is no need to re-upload the video or trim the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio, go to the content section, and select the desired stream VOD.

1. Open the video editing page.
2. Find the description field.
3. Add a list of time markers and episode titles.
4. Save the changes.
5. Open the VOD as a viewer and check the player.

The description can be changed at any time: expand the list after reviewing the VOD, fix inaccurate titles, and remove unnecessary items.

How to format time markers in the description

Each timestamp consists of a time and a short block title. Time is written in minutes:seconds format, and for long broadcasts — hours:minutes:seconds. Markers are best placed on separate lines: this makes the list easier to read and edit.

What rules apply to YouTube chapters

For time markers to turn into chapters, the list must contain at least three items. Each section must last at least ten seconds. If you place several markers at almost the same point, YouTube may not show the breakdown in the player.

Do not split the broadcast into too many tiny pieces. For a stream, it is usually more useful to mark a change of game, mode, guest, conversation topic, tournament start, or an important analysis. Individual frags, donations, and short remarks are better saved for clips, Shorts, or a pinned comment.

What to check if timestamps are not showing

First, make sure the VOD is available for viewing and the changes are saved. Then check the first line: it must start exactly with 0:00. An error in a single character, a missing colon, or text before the time can prevent the list from being recognized.

Also check the number of items and the spacing between them. Remove duplicate times, overly short chapters, and stray markers left over from a draft. After edits, refresh the video page: chapter display in the player may not appear instantly.

How to prepare timestamps faster

During the broadcast, jot down the time of major events in notes: match start, category change, challenge start, guest appearance. After the stream, you will only need to fine-tune the seconds and align the titles to a consistent style. This is faster than rewatching several hours of VOD from scratch.

If streams go out regularly, use a consistent structure: intro, main game, chat segment, finale. But do not copy markers without checking — a timestamp must lead to the real moment in the VOD, otherwise viewers will lose trust in the navigation.
