How to search by hashtag on VK from your phone and computer
How hashtag search works on VK
A hashtag is a word or phrase with a hash sign at the beginning. For example: #music, #stream, #citynews. VKontakte links public posts with the same tags, so a single tag can help you find posts from users and communities.
For an accurate search, it's important to reproduce the spelling character for character. Hashtags don't contain spaces: multiple words are written together or separated by an underscore, for example #summerholiday or #summer_holiday. The hash sign goes before the whole phrase, not before each word.
- #stream and #streams are considered different hashtags;
- Russian and English variants, for example #video and #video, are not merged automatically;
- punctuation marks can end a hashtag and are not part of it;
- posts from private communities and posts with limited visibility may not appear in the results.
How to search a hashtag from a computer and phone
On a computer, open VKontakte, click on the search bar, and enter the hashtag in full, including the # sign. Run the search and select the section with posts or entries. Tab names may change after interface updates, so focus on the results related specifically to posts.
- Log in to VKontakte.
- Open search.
- Enter the exact query, for example #travel.
- Go to the post results.
- Check the author, community, date, and content of the post.
In the mobile app, the process is similar: tap the search icon, enter the tag, and open the posts. Sometimes general results are shown first, so you'll need to select the right section separately.
If the hashtag is already in a relevant post, click on it directly in the text. VKontakte will open a page with posts for that tag. This method is more convenient than typing manually: you won't make a mistake with the keyboard layout, ending, or underscore.
Why VK doesn't show the posts you need
An empty or irrelevant result doesn't always mean there are no posts. First, check the query itself and the availability of the post.
- Spelling error: a typo, a different keyboard layout, or an English version instead of Russian.
- Format error: a space inside the phrase, an extra character, a different number of underscores, or a punctuation mark in the middle.
- A different variant of the word: a changed ending, number, transliteration, or part of the phrase.
- The post was deleted, hidden by privacy settings, or placed in a private community.
- You opened the wrong section instead of posts, or you're only seeing the part of the materials available to you.
Compare the query with the hashtag in the original post character by character. You can try searching without the hash sign: then VKontakte will search for the regular word in the text, not just posts with a formatted hashtag. This helps find mentions where the author didn't use the # sign, but it doesn't replace searching by the tag itself.

How to check your own hashtag before launching
If you're preparing a stream, a contest, or a series of posts, check the tag before publishing your first post. Enter it into VK search along with the # sign and see what materials already exist. This way you'll understand whether the tag is already taken by another topic and whether your feed will get mixed up with other people's posts.
- Come up with several spelling variants for the name, project, or rubric.
- Check each variant through VKontakte search.
- Open the posts you find and assess how related they are to your topic.
- Choose a short and easy-to-read spelling without extra characters.
- Settle on one variant and use it consistently in all your posts.
For a brand, channel, or stream, it's better to use a combination with a distinctive word rather than a too-generic tag like #game or #music. A unique combination helps separate your posts from others', but an overly complex hashtag is harder to remember and more often typed with mistakes.
Check not only the tag itself but also its variants: the combined spelling, the variant with an underscore, the Russian and Latin keyboard layouts. After launching, periodically open the tag page and see whether new posts appear and whether outside authors are using it.
Tools and bots for tracking hashtags on VKontakte
For a one-time check, VK's built-in search is enough. If you need to regularly track mentions of a channel, event, or rubric, you can use third-party monitoring services and bots that collect public posts by given words.
- Check whether the tool supports specifically public VKontakte posts, not just other platforms.
- Find out whether it can track an exact hashtag, spelling variants, and new mentions.
- Don't count on data from private communities and private profiles: such posts are unavailable to external monitoring.
- Don't give the bot unnecessary permissions, and first compare its results with regular VK search.
For a small channel, you can keep a simple table: record the check date, the link to the post, the author, and the context of the mention. This doesn't replace community statistics, but it helps you see where your tag appears and which posts are associated with it. Assess reach and engagement by the available statistics of the posts themselves, not just by the number of matches found.
How hashtag search on VK differs from other platforms
The same hashtag doesn't work the same way across all social networks. On VKontakte, clicking a tag opens posts with that tag, while on video platforms it may lead to a collection of videos or affect search by video description. On other platforms, the result also depends on recommendations, subscriptions, publication date, and visibility rules.
If you run a channel on several platforms at once, check the tag separately on each of them. The same base can preserve recognizability, but the spelling, length, and set of additional tags don't have to match. Don't transfer conclusions about popularity from one social network to another: a large number of results on VK doesn't mean the same output on a video hosting site.
- First check the exact variant on VK.
- Then check it separately on each platform where you publish content.
- For each network, take into account its own rules for search and post visibility.
In short: what to do step by step
- Copy the exact spelling of the hashtag from the original post or choose a verified variant.
- Enter it into VKontakte search with the # sign and open the posts section.
- If there are no results, check the keyboard layout, spaces, underscores, endings, and post availability.
- Before launching your own tag, check its variants and make sure the results aren't filled with someone else's topic.
- For regular monitoring, use VK search, a table, or a verified tool for monitoring public mentions.
