How to Enable "Unlisted" Access for a YouTube Livestream

What link-only access means

On YouTube, "link only" mode is usually called "Unlisted." The livestream does not appear in the channel's public video list, search results, recommendations, or subscribers' feeds. Anyone who has the URL of the stream page can watch it.

This is not full access protection. A viewer can forward the link to other people, and they can open the livestream without a separate invitation. That's why this mode works well for private meetings, test streams, viewing by a small group, or a broadcast that doesn't need to be promoted through YouTube search.

Don't confuse unlisted access with "Private" mode. A private livestream is intended for selected users and requires stricter setup. With unlisted access, YouTube doesn't check who exactly you sent the address to.

How to enable the mode when creating a livestream

The setup is done in YouTube Studio. Open Studio on a computer, click the create content button, and select the option to start a live stream. If you're streaming for the first time, YouTube may ask you to verify your channel and activate the livestreaming feature. This activation sometimes takes some time.

In the stream setup window, find the "Visibility" section. Depending on the interface version and the type of livestream you selected, the option you need may be called "Unlisted" or "Link only." Select it instead of "Public."

After that, set up the title, description, thumbnail, age restrictions, and chat if needed. Click "Save" or continue scheduling the stream. Then copy the URL of the viewing page using the "Share" button and send it to the viewers who need it.

Make sure you've selected unlisted access and not private mode. With the private setting, viewers you simply send the URL to may not be able to access the stream.

How to change the visibility of an already created stream

If the livestream is already scheduled, you don't need to recreate it from scratch. In YouTube Studio, open the content section and go to the live streams tab. Find the stream you need, open its settings, and go to the visibility setting.

Select "Unlisted," click "Save," and copy the updated link using the "Share" button. If the stream has already started, some settings may be available directly in the stream control window. If necessary, open the video details or the settings menu next to the stream title.

The title and the viewing page URL are not the same thing. After you change the title, the address usually stays the same, but it's best to rely on the link YouTube shows in the "Share" menu for that specific livestream.

If you're streaming via OBS or another encoder, visibility is set in YouTube Studio, not in the software used to send the video. The encoder transmits the image and sound but does not replace the access settings for the YouTube page.

How to check that the livestream is hidden

After saving, copy the stream link and open it in another browser or in incognito mode. Don't sign in to the channel owner's account: this way you'll see the page closer to how a regular viewer sees it.

If the stream hasn't started yet, the viewer should see the scheduled livestream page rather than a recording in the channel's public list. During the stream, the viewing page should open and, if chat is enabled, the chat window. If you see an access restriction message, check whether private mode has been selected.

You can send the link to the viewers who need it via a direct message, a private group, or a mailing. Don't post it publicly if you want to keep the reach small: any user with this address can pass it on.

After the stream ends, separately check the visibility of the recording in the content section. If the archive shouldn't be publicly available, set the same "Unlisted" mode for it or another suitable option.
