How to Pin a Viewer's Comment in TikTok LIVE

What Pinning a Comment in TikTok LIVE Does

A pinned comment stays at the top of the chat area and doesn't get lost among new messages. You can use it for a viewer's question, stream rules, the topic of the broadcast, or a short request to the audience.

Pinning doesn't delete the comment or turn it into text overlaid on the video. The message remains part of the LIVE chat, and viewers of the current stream see it separately from the regular comment feed.

This tool helps quickly bring attention back to a single topic. For example, during a game you can pin a viewer's question that you're answering, and during a conversation you can pin a request to write your city or choose one of the options. The pinned text doesn't replace a spoken explanation, but it helps new viewers understand what the conversation is about.

The command is usually used by the streamer. A moderator will only see it if they have the appropriate permissions. On TikTok, you can most often pin one message: if you select a new comment, the previous one is no longer pinned.

What to Check Before Pinning

This guide assumes the stream is already live. Starting a broadcast via the "+" button, selecting the "LIVE" section, and tapping "Start LIVE" are not related to pinning a comment — you only need to return to these steps when preparing a new stream.

First, make sure you're running your own broadcast. In someone else's stream, a regular viewer can't manage messages, and a moderator only sees the actions the streamer and the TikTok interface allow them to take. If the option isn't there, it doesn't always mean something is wrong: permissions can differ between the streamer and a moderator.

Button names and element placement sometimes change depending on the app version, interface language, device type, and TikTok updates. So focus on what the command means: "Pin comment" is responsible for showing the message at the top of the chat, and "Unpin comment" is responsible for removing it from that area.

How to Pin a Viewer's Comment

Once the message you want has appeared in the chat, you don't need to start a separate stream. Just follow a few steps right in the window of the current broadcast:

  1. Find the comment in the chat that you want to show viewers separately.
  2. Tap the message. If a regular tap doesn't open the menu, press and hold the comment with your finger.
  3. In the action menu, select "Pin comment."
  4. Check the top of the chat area: the selected message should appear separately from the flow of new comments.

Don't rush to tap a message while the chat is scrolling quickly. If comments are coming in one after another, the line you want may shift, and the menu will open for a different viewer. If needed, find the text again and make sure the comment shown at the top of the chat is the one you selected.

The illustration shows where the comment menu opens and what the "Pin comment" option looks like. In the actual app, the design may look slightly different, but the logic stays the same.

Where Viewers See the Pinned Message

Once pinned, the comment sits at the top of the LIVE chat area, above the regular message feed or in a separate highlighted block. It's not a banner over the video, and it's not text added to the stream's design. The message is tied specifically to the chat of the current stream.

Regular comments keep coming in below and can quickly disappear from the visible part of the screen. The pinned text stays in a noticeable spot longer, so it's convenient for short instructions. Long messages may not display in full, especially on a small screen.

If a viewer joins after the pin, they may see the message once the chat loads. If display is delayed, refreshing the stream or reopening the chat sometimes helps, but the result depends on the connection, the app version, and how the platform itself is working.

A new pin usually replaces the previous one. So you can leave a viewer's question at the top while you answer it, then remove it and pin the rules, the next question, or another relevant tip.

How to Unpin a Comment

To remove a message from the pinned area, tap it at the top of the chat. In the menu that opens, select "Unpin comment." If the option doesn't appear, press and hold the pinned message again or find it through the current comment menu.

Unpinning doesn't necessarily delete the comment from the chat. It only cancels its pinned position. The message may remain among the regular comments if it hasn't been deleted separately and is still available in the feed.

If you need to remove the text entirely, use the delete command, not "Unpin comment." These actions serve different purposes: the first removes the highlighted position, the second removes the message from the chat according to the available permissions and settings.

Pinning applies to the current LIVE and doesn't turn the message into a pinned profile post. After the stream ends, the comment doesn't become a separate entry on the channel page.

What's Best to Pin in the Chat

Choose short messages that are clear without extra explanation. This could be a question about the stream's topic, the name of a game, a request to write your city, or an answer option. A viewer should be able to read the text quickly without being distracted from the video and the conversation.

If a viewer asked a question, pin it while you answer, then replace it with the next message. This approach helps keep the conversation going in turn and avoids leaving an outdated topic at the top. For a constant reminder, communication rules, the stream schedule, or clear instructions for taking part in an activity work well.

It's best to phrase the text neutrally and without unnecessary details. Avoid pinning a long story, several questions at once, or a message whose meaning is only clear from the previous conversation. Important information should fit into a short phrase.

Check the content before pinning. Don't leave messages with personal data, insults, unverified advertising, or suspicious links at the top of the chat. A pinned comment gets more attention than the rest, so a mistake in it is immediately noticeable.

If you stream with a moderator, agree in advance on which messages can be pinned and when they should be changed. This reduces the risk of a random comment or an outdated instruction being left at the top of the chat.

Why There's No "Pin comment" Option

First, check that you opened the menu for your own comment during your own LIVE. A regular viewer in someone else's stream doesn't have access to the streamer's actions. If someone else is streaming, only they or an assigned moderator with the right permissions can pin a message.

At the same time, the feature may also be unavailable for some accounts, even if you're the one streaming. The availability of certain TikTok tools can also differ across regions, devices, and specific app versions. In that case, the missing option isn't necessarily related to the settings of a particular comment.

The command may not appear if the message has already been deleted, hidden by a filter, violates chat restrictions, or the feed hasn't refreshed yet. Close the menu, wait for the comment to appear again, and tap it once more. Don't select a line while it's scrolling quickly: you might open another viewer's menu.

Check the comment settings during the LIVE. Open the additional actions menu, go to the stream settings, and find the section related to comments. If comments are fully disabled or strict restrictions are enabled for the chat, the messages you need may not show up.

If the error happens again, update TikTok through the app store, restart the app, and check your internet connection. On an old app version or with a weak connection, some menu options may load with a delay. If viewers can't see the pinned comment, ask them to reopen the stream and the chat.

If the command is still missing after these steps, don't try to replace it with random settings. Check TikTok's help materials for your region and account type: access to the feature may depend on platform restrictions that can't be changed during the current stream.

In Short: What to Do Step by Step

  1. Make sure you're running your own TikTok LIVE and the comment you need has already appeared in the chat.
  2. Tap the comment or press and hold it with your finger if the menu doesn't open with a regular tap.
  3. Select "Pin comment" and check the top of the chat area.
  4. To cancel the pin, open the highlighted message and tap "Unpin comment."
  5. If the command isn't there, check permissions, comment settings, the app version, the connection, feature availability for the account, and regional restrictions.
