Poll in YouTube Live: Instructions for Launching
What a Poll in YouTube Live Is
A poll in YouTube Live is an interactive block within the stream chat. Viewers choose one of the offered options, and you can see which answer gets the most votes. This format helps you quickly learn your audience's opinion and engage viewers in what's happening on the stream.
You can use a poll when choosing a game, the topic of the next episode, the format of interaction, or a decision related to the broadcast. It works better than a regular question in the chat because the viewer doesn't have to formulate an answer themselves. All they need to do is pick the right option.
Before launching, formulate one clear question. The answer options should differ from each other and not overlap in meaning. Usually it's convenient to offer two to four options. If the answers are too similar or the question turns out to be long, it will be harder for viewers to vote quickly.
How to Create a Poll During a Stream
Creating a poll is done through YouTube Studio and the live stream control panel. On a computer, the necessary elements are usually available in the stream chat block. Button names may differ slightly depending on the interface language.
- Open YouTube Studio and start or prepare your live stream.
- Go to the Live Control Room — the stream control panel.
- Find the "Chat" or "Live chat" window and click the icon for adding an action. In the menu that opens, select creating a poll.
- Enter the question and add answer options. Check the text before launching: once published, you can't quickly change the wording.
- Click the button to launch or publish the poll. After that, it will appear in the chat, and viewers will be able to choose one option.
If you're streaming from a phone, the required feature may not be available in the current interface. To set up a poll, it's best to open YouTube Studio on a computer in advance and check the available tools before the stream begins.

How to Work with a Poll On Air
Before launching, briefly explain to viewers what exactly they need to choose. For example, let them know that the vote will determine the next game or discussion topic. This reduces the number of random answers and helps the audience understand the purpose of the poll.
Don't launch a poll without a comment and don't immediately switch to another topic. Give viewers time to notice it in the chat, vote, and discuss the options. The exact duration depends on audience activity and the pace of the stream: a simple question usually needs less time than a choice between several ideas.
When there are enough votes, end the poll using the chat controls. After that, YouTube shows the final distribution of answers. Discuss the result out loud and explain whether it will affect the rest of the stream. If the decision has already been made in advance, don't create the impression that the viewers' votes changed anything.
If you need to ask a new question, first end the current poll, then create the next one. Each new question is best tied to what's happening on the stream rather than using votes without a clear purpose.
What to Do If There's No Poll Button
First, check that you've opened the control panel of an active stream and not a regular channel page. Also make sure that live chat is enabled on the stream. If chat is disabled or the stream is subject to restrictions related to channel and audience settings, some interactive features may be unavailable.
Try refreshing YouTube Studio and opening it on a computer in a different browser. Check that you're logged into the correct channel and have the rights of the stream's author. If someone else is hosting the stream, ask the channel owner to open the poll themselves.
Sometimes the controls are hidden due to an interface change. In this case, focus on the live chat block and the add actions menu. If the feature still doesn't appear, run a test stream with restricted access and check in advance which tools are available specifically to your channel.
In Short: What to Do Step by Step
- Prepare one clear question and two to four answer options.
- Open YouTube Studio and the live stream control panel on a computer.
- In the live chat block, select creating a poll.
- Check the text and launch the vote.
- Discuss the result with viewers and end the poll when there are enough votes.
