What makes up the fee when paying with crypto and why networks cost differently

Three layers of fees in a crypto transfer

When you pay for services with crypto, the final amount debited does not equal the amount on the invoice. The difference comes from three parts, and only one of them actually affects the speed and confirmation of the transaction.

• Network fee (gas fee) — payment to miners or validators for including the transfer in a block.
• Exchange or wallet fee — the service you use to send the coin charges its own percentage for the operation. Often fixed and independent of the amount.
• Payment gateway fee — if you pay for services (e.g., hosting or ads), the receiving party may build in conversion costs and its own risk. This is usually stated separately in the terms.

Streamers most often work with USDT or stablecoins, so below we look at how they behave across different networks.

Why one network is cheaper than another: the basic mechanics

The speed and price of a transfer depend on the blockchain's architecture. There are two fundamentally different approaches:

1. Networks with an auction for block space (Ethereum, BNB Chain) — users compete to pay more for processing. The higher the demand, the more expensive each transfer.
2. Networks with fixed or predictable pricing (TRON, Solana, TON) — validators receive a steady reward, and throughput is high. The price does not spike with every new user.

TRC20 (TRON network) keeps fees around 1-2 USDT per transfer, with speed at 1-3 seconds. ERC20 (Ethereum) can cost anywhere from 5 to 50 USDT during peak hours because every wallet competes for gas with DeFi farms and NFT mints. The difference is not that TRON is "kinder," but that there is no global queue there.

Throughput and block size

Ethereum has a limited gas limit per block, while the number of transactions is huge. When demand exceeds the limit, miners only pick transfers with high gas paid. The rest sit for hours. TRON has large blocks, 27 validators, and they manage to process everyone. That is why the price is low.

What the fee size depends on at any given moment

For auction-based networks, the transfer price is determined by three parameters:

• Network load — the number of transactions in the mempool (queue) over the last few minutes. If the queue is large, gas rises.
• Transfer complexity — a regular USDT transfer requires about 50-60 thousand gas. A transfer involving a smart contract (swap, staking) can cost 3-5 times more because it requires more computation.
• Chosen priority — you set how much you are willing to pay for gas yourself. Wallets show "slow / average / fast." The difference between "slow" and "fast" can be 2-3 times.

For networks with fixed fees (TRON, Stellar), the amount barely changes. For the Bitcoin network, the fee depends on the transaction size in bytes, not the amount. A transfer of 100 dollars and one of 100,000 dollars will cost the same because the data takes up the same volume.

Exchange withdrawal fee vs network fee

A common mistake is confusing the exchange fee with the network fee. When you withdraw USDT from Binance, Bybit, or OKX, the platform charges its own fee. It can differ from the actual gas by 2-3 times. For example:

• Withdrawing USDT on the TRON network from many exchanges costs 1 USDT, even though the actual network charges around 0.8-1.2 USDT. The exchange does not profit and sometimes tops up the difference.
• Withdrawing on the ERC20 network — the exchange charges 5-10 USDT, while the network gas at that moment may be 3-4 USDT. The rest is margin.

If you pay directly from a wallet (not through an exchange), you see the true network fee. If you go through an exchange, expect a markup.

How to reduce fees for recurring payments

• Choose TRC20 or BEP20 for stablecoins — almost always cheaper than ERC20. BEP20 (BNB Chain) usually costs around 0.1-0.3 USDT.
• Track network load — Ethereum has peak hours (usually Friday evening UTC). On weekends, gas is 20-40% cheaper.
• Do not set maximum priority — for a regular transfer, average is enough. It will go through in 1-5 minutes instead of 30 seconds, but you will save up to 30%.
• Use the Lightning Network for BTC if you accept bitcoin directly. Fees there are fractions of a cent, but you need a Lightning wallet.

Why the same token in different networks is a different asset

USDT exists as smart contracts on different blockchains. These are different tokens, and the network does not convert them automatically. If you send USDT from the Ethereum network to an address created for the Tron network, the funds will be lost. Therefore, you need the same network type as the recipient. Service providers specify only one network in their details — that is the one you must use. Trying to save money by sending through another network will result in a loss of funds with no refund.
