Why TikTok LIVE Studio Won't Capture Your Game Window

TikTok LIVE Studio Won't Capture Your Game: Causes and Solutions

Why TikTok LIVE Studio Can't See Your Game

The capture problem is usually not about the game itself, but about the way TikTok LIVE Studio receives the image. The app may fail to find the right window, lack sufficient permissions, or run on a different graphics card. Sometimes the source is added correctly but hidden in the scene or covered by another element.

First, determine exactly how the error manifests:

  • the game isn't in the list of available windows;
  • the source is added but the preview shows a black screen;
  • you see the desktop or launcher instead of the game;
  • the image appears but freezes after a match starts;
  • everything works in the preview, but a different scene is shown on stream.

Each case calls for its own troubleshooting approach. Don't change all the settings at once: after each step, launch the game and check whether the preview image has changed.

Check the Source and the Selected Window

In TikTok LIVE Studio, you can use game capture, window capture, or screen capture for your game. The menu item names may vary depending on the app version. If window capture is selected, make sure the list shows the game window itself, not the launcher, browser, or another app.

Close unnecessary windows and refresh the source. In some games, the window title changes after you log into your profile or enter a match. In that case, LIVE Studio keeps looking for the old window and stops showing the image. Delete the non-working source and add it again after the game has fully launched.

Also check the source's position in the scene. It must be enabled and placed above the background, frame, and other full-screen elements. If an opaque background is placed over the capture, only that background will be visible in the preview.

  • Open the scene used for the stream.
  • Check the visibility icon of the game source.
  • Make sure the source isn't covered by another image or video.
  • Expand the capture area on the canvas if it was shrunk or cropped.

If the game appears but only fills part of the canvas, resize it manually or apply a fit to the working area. This doesn't fix the capture itself, but it helps distinguish a source problem from incorrect scaling.

Change the Game's Display Mode

Games running in exclusive fullscreen mode sometimes don't pass the image to standard window capture. This is especially noticeable when the game launches with elevated permissions or uses its own graphics mode. To test, switch it to borderless windowed mode. If that option isn't available, temporarily choose regular windowed mode.

After changing the mode, fully restart the game. Minimizing and maximizing doesn't always refresh the connection between the game and the source. Then, in LIVE Studio, select the window again or recreate the source.

Check the launch sequence:

  1. Close the game and TikTok LIVE Studio.
  2. Launch LIVE Studio and open the desired scene.
  3. Launch the game and wait for the main menu.
  4. Add or refresh the capture source.
  5. Check the preview image before going live.

If capture only works in windowed mode, use it as a temporary workaround. Later you can try a different source type or update your graphics card driver. Don't rush back to fullscreen mode if it brings back the black screen.

Compare Launch Permissions and the Graphics Card in Use

When the game and LIVE Studio run with different permissions, the app may not be able to access the window. For example, the game runs as administrator while the studio runs normally. In this case, try closing both apps and launching them with the same permissions. Don't disable Windows protection or change system security settings unless necessary.

On a laptop, a separate cause is having different graphics adapters. The game may use the high-performance graphics card while LIVE Studio uses the integrated one. As a result, capture sometimes fails to find the right graphics process or shows an empty window.

Check the app assignments in your operating system's graphics settings. Select the same adapter for both the game and LIVE Studio, then restart both apps. If you're using the graphics card control panel, change only the settings for these programs, not the parameters for the entire system.

Also check the load on your graphics card. If the game is fully using the available resources, LIVE Studio may not be able to process the image in time. For a test, lower the game's graphics settings, cap the frame rate, or close resource-heavy apps. This doesn't necessarily mean your computer is weak: sometimes it's enough to free up some resources for capture.

After these changes, look not only at whether the image appears but also at its stability. If the image appears with a delay, flickers, or freezes, the cause may be an overloaded graphics adapter or a conflict between the apps.

Why TikTok LIVE Studio Won't Capture Your Game Window

Consider Game Protection and Capture Limitations

Some games use anti-cheat, protected rendering, or other mechanisms that make window capture unstable. In that case, LIVE Studio may show a black screen, the desktop, or a frozen frame. This isn't always fixed by adjusting the source.

To test, try a different capture method. If game capture doesn't work, test window capture. If that doesn't show the image either, you can try full-screen capture. The latter usually captures what's displayed on the monitor, but notifications, messages, and other personal data may end up on stream along with the game.

Before capturing the screen, close windows with personal information and turn on Do Not Disturb mode. Keep in mind the rules of the game and the platform: don't try to bypass protection or modify game files just to enable capture. If a specific game blocks the image, it's safer to choose a supported mode or check its official documentation for a solution.

If the image only appears with screen capture, this points to an incompatibility between the selected capture type and the game, not necessarily a malfunction of LIVE Studio.

Check Drivers, HDR, and Scene Settings

An outdated or malfunctioning graphics card driver can cause a black screen, flickering, and frozen image. Update the driver from the graphics card manufacturer's official source, then restart your computer. After updating, add the source again, especially if the app previously remembered the old window.

If you're using HDR, temporarily disable it for the desktop and the game. Different color modes sometimes lead to black or incorrectly displayed capture. After testing, you can re-enable HDR and try a different source type if the image disappears again.

Check the basic scene settings:

  • is the scene assigned to the current stream selected;
  • has the source been accidentally disabled;
  • is it covered by a full-screen element;
  • is an old source with a closed window still selected;
  • does the canvas size match the game's or monitor's resolution.

If the game is visible in one scene but not in another, the problem lies in the scene settings, not the game itself. Copy the working source into the desired scene or set it up again.

What to Do If the Game Shows in the Preview but Not on Stream

In this case, capture is most likely working, and the error is related to the selected scene or switching between scenes. Before going live, check which scene is active. Some elements may be visible in one scene and missing in another.

Run a test with a minimal scene: leave only the game source and a simple background. If the image comes through, add back frames, notifications, and other elements one at a time. This way you'll find the object that's covering the game or adding load.

If the image disappears only after minimizing the game, check windowed mode again and disable unnecessary optimizers, overlays, and apps that change the display over the game. Don't add several new capture apps at once: they may conflict with each other.

Quick Step-by-Step Checklist

  1. Check that the correct source and the right window are selected in the scene.
  2. Delete the old source and add it again after launching the game.
  3. Switch the game from fullscreen mode to borderless windowed mode.
  4. Launch the game and LIVE Studio with the same permissions.
  5. Make sure both apps use the same graphics card.
  6. Try window capture or full-screen capture if game capture doesn't work.
  7. Update the driver, temporarily disable HDR, and check the scene without extra elements.

If none of these methods helped, note the game's name, display mode, source type, and when the black screen appears. This data will make it easier to find a solution in the game's and TikTok LIVE Studio's documentation.
