Why Twitch Doesn't Show Your Stream in a Game Category

Why Your Stream Isn't Visible in the Twitch Category List and How to Check It

What It Means When Your Stream Is Missing from a Twitch Category

If you can't find your broadcast in a game's channel list, it doesn't always mean Twitch has completely hidden your stream. The stream may open via a direct link, appear on your channel page, and yet not show up in the top positions of the directory.

The list within a category isn't a simple feed where channels appear in the order they went live. What shows up is affected by the selected sorting, language, tags, regional interface settings, and other filters. When there are a lot of broadcasts, a stream with a small audience can end up far from the top of the list.

First, check that your channel is actually missing from the category and not just not showing on the first page. Open the game page, clear the filters, try different sorting options, and use the search by channel name. Also open your channel page in viewer mode rather than from the creator dashboard.

How Twitch Determines a Stream's Category

The main parameter is the category specified in the stream information. The stream title, its description, and the set of tags don't replace the category. If the title mentions a game name but a different category is selected in the settings, Twitch will assign the broadcast to the category you selected.

The category is changed in the stream control panel in the field with the game or category. After selecting, save the changes and check your channel page from a viewer's perspective. If you changed the category while already live, the directory update may not appear right away.

The game name in the directory must match the official option that Twitch offers. Don't type it manually into the title and expect the service to recognize the game. If the option you need isn't in the list, the issue may be related to the absence of a separate category, directory specifics, or a temporary loading error.

Incorrect or Changed Category

A common cause is that the streamer accidentally selected a similar section. This happens with games that have multiple versions, additional modes, or similar titles. Check the category not only by the title but also in the stream settings field.

If you switched games during the stream, some viewers may see the old category for a while due to a page refresh or cache. Close the page, reopen it, and ask another user to check your channel without logging in. This helps separate an issue with the creator's interface from a real absence of the stream in the directory.

Don't pick a random category just to get into the list. A mismatch between the stream's content and the selected game confuses viewers and can lead to reports. If there's no suitable category, it's better to check the available options and clarify the situation through Twitch support.

Filters and Sorting Hide Your Channel from View

The category page may have filters enabled by language, tags, or other parameters. If your stream doesn't match the selected filter, it won't appear in the results, even though the category is set correctly. Reset all filters and repeat the search.

Sorting also changes how the list looks. The option with recommendations or popular channels doesn't have to show all broadcasts in the same order. Your stream may be lower than you expect, especially if there are many channels in the category at the same time.

Check visibility from another account or in a private browser window. A viewer's account may have saved filters, interface language, or settings that affect the results. If your channel is found via a direct link but isn't visible in the general list, this more often points to filtering or result ordering rather than complete hiding.

Why Twitch doesn't show a stream in the game category list

Twitch Directory Update Delay

Some time may pass between going live and your channel appearing in the category. The service needs to process the stream information, link it to the selected game, and update several elements of the directory. When you change the category, the delay may happen again.

Don't restart your stream right after every check. First make sure the stream is available on your channel page, then refresh the category page after some time. Checking simultaneously from multiple devices won't speed up the update, but it will help you figure out whether the issue is tied to a specific browser or account.

If direct viewing works, the category is set correctly, filters are off, and your channel still doesn't appear to any viewer after a long time, the cause may be on Twitch's side. In that case, it's worth checking whether outages are being reported on the service's official channels.

Browser, App, or Interface Issue

Sometimes the category list loads incorrectly in only one place. A corrupted cache, an outdated tab, a browser extension, or an app glitch can show an incomplete channel list.

  • refresh the category page;
  • open Twitch in another browser or a private window;
  • check the stream from a phone and a computer;
  • log out and repeat the search without authorization;
  • temporarily disable extensions that change how pages are displayed;
  • check whether other channels are visible in this category.

If the problem only appears in the app, update it or check the web version. If the same error occurs on different devices and for other viewers, local browser settings are most likely not the cause.

When to Contact Twitch Support

Contact support if the category is selected from the official list, the stream is available via a direct link, filters are off, and your channel doesn't appear in the directory after repeated checks. In your request, include the link to your channel, the selected category, the time you went live, and a description of exactly where the channel isn't showing.

It helps to attach screenshots of the control panel and the category page from a viewer's perspective. Don't send just the message "stream not visible": support will have a harder time reproducing the issue without a link, the category name, and information about the devices you checked.

If your channel doesn't open via a direct link, first check the stream status, your streaming software connection, and any warnings in the creator dashboard. In this case, the problem may not be with the directory but with the fact that the stream never actually started or has ended.

What to Do Step by Step

  1. Open your stream settings and make sure the correct game category is selected.
  2. Check your channel via a direct link from a viewer's perspective.
  3. On the category page, reset the filters and change the sorting.
  4. Search for your channel from another account, device, or in a private window.
  5. Wait for the directory to update after going live or changing the category.
  6. If the problem persists, check Twitch's official announcements and send a request to support with the details.
