Why Twitch Doesn't Save the Broadcast Recording When VOD Is Enabled

Why Twitch Doesn't Save the Broadcast Recording Even Though VOD Is Enabled

Why Twitch Doesn't Create a Broadcast Recording

A live broadcast and a VOD are two different processes. While you're live, Twitch delivers the video to viewers. After the broadcast ends, the platform must separately process the received stream and create a recording in the video section. That's why having the storage setting enabled doesn't mean a VOD will appear immediately after you click "End Stream."

The most common reason is that the storage option was turned off when the broadcast started. If you enable it after the stream has ended, Twitch won't restore the recording retroactively. The setting applies to future broadcasts, so you need to check it before going live.

It's also important to distinguish a VOD from clips, highlights, and uploaded videos. They live in the same section but are created differently. Having clips doesn't prove that Twitch saved the full broadcast: a clip can be available separately even if the original recording never appeared.

Check Video Producer and the Video Filter

Open the Creator Dashboard and go to Video Producer. That's where the recording of a past broadcast first appears. On the page, check the filter: the selected video type should match past broadcasts, not clips, highlights, or uploads.

If the broadcast just ended, the VOD may still be processing. At that point, the recording sometimes isn't displayed right away or appears without a finished thumbnail and full information. Refresh the page later and check it from another device or in a logged-out session. This helps distinguish an interface delay from a missing recording.

If the VOD is in Video Producer but isn't visible on the channel page, check its status. The recording may have remained unpublished. Automatic publishing of past broadcasts may also be disabled in Twitch's stream settings. In that case, the recording is created, but viewers won't see it in the public video list until you publish it manually.

Make Sure Storage Is Enabled Before Going Live

In your channel settings, find the option called Store past broadcasts in the English interface (in the Russian version it relates to saving past broadcasts). It must be enabled before you start the stream. After changing the setting, save the parameters and reload the page to make sure Twitch didn't revert to the previous value.

Also check the channel itself that the broadcast is running on. If you manage multiple channels or opened the Creator Dashboard in a different account, the setting may have been changed in the wrong place. When launching through third-party software, it's also important to make sure the broadcast is actually being sent to the right channel, not to another account or a test profile.

Separately, check automatic VOD publishing if that option is available in your account. With publishing disabled, the recording may be created but not appear among publicly available videos. This isn't the same as a missing VOD, so look for it in Video Producer first.

If your streaming software closed due to a crash, your internet dropped, or the connection to the Twitch server was interrupted, the platform may not immediately recognize that the broadcast has ended. Sometimes the recording appears later, and sometimes only part of the broadcast is saved. When you reconnect, a separate fragment may also be processed differently than a normally ended broadcast.

Before ending the broadcast, stop the stream in the software itself and make sure the status in the Twitch panel has changed. Don't close the software right after clicking the stop button. If the connection dropped, wait for Twitch to end the session on its own, and only then start a new broadcast.

If the problem repeats consistently, check your streaming software: update it, reselect the server, and check the stream key. Don't change all the parameters at once. First, run a short test with local recording enabled to figure out where the recording is lost — before it's sent to Twitch or after the platform receives the stream.

Music, movie fragments, sports broadcasts, and other third-party content can affect how the recording is processed. Twitch may mute certain parts of a VOD, restrict access to the video, or remove it due to a rights holder's complaint. In that case, the problem isn't the storage toggle.

Check the notifications in your account and the violation details. If Twitch stated the reason for removal, don't try to re-upload the same material without permission. For future broadcasts, use content that you own the rights to or that permits streaming and recording storage.

Automatic music muting doesn't always mean the VOD is fully removed. More often it affects certain fragments, but the result depends on the specific case and the platform's decision. So if the entire recording is missing, check notifications first, then the settings and the video's status.

Check the Recording's Retention Period

Twitch doesn't store past broadcasts indefinitely. The period depends on the account type and the platform's current rules. When that period ends, the VOD is deleted automatically, even if storage is enabled. The setting is responsible for creating new recordings but doesn't extend the retention period of old broadcasts.

If the recording is still available, save important fragments in advance: download them, create a highlight, or move the material to another archive. You need to do this before the retention period ends. After automatic deletion, as a rule, a VOD can no longer be restored through the regular Twitch interface.

If the broadcast disappeared after a noticeable amount of time, look at the broadcast date and check whether the retention period has expired. If the VOD vanished right after the broadcast ended, the cause is most likely related to settings, processing, copyright, or a technical failure.

What to Do, Step by Step

  1. Open Video Producer and check the past broadcasts filter.
  2. Make sure the VOD isn't still processing and isn't marked as unpublished.
  3. Check the storage of past broadcasts and automatic publishing in your channel settings.
  4. Verify the account and channel that the broadcast was launched on.
  5. Look at copyright violation notifications and the recording's retention period.
  6. If the problem repeats, check your connection, streaming software, and Twitch service status, and save important broadcasts locally at the same time.
