Why viewers don't see subtitles on Twitch during a live stream

Why subtitles don't show up on Twitch during a stream

Why subtitles on Twitch aren't visible to everyone

Subtitles on Twitch don't appear automatically just because a streamer is broadcasting via OBS or another program. They require a separate source: a feature, extension, or speech recognition service that sends text to the stream.

If subtitles are added as an interface element, they may not be embedded in the video stream itself but overlaid on top of it. In that case, the viewer must support the required extension and enable its display. On one device, the text will be visible, but on another, it won't.

First, determine how subtitles get to the channel. The troubleshooting steps depend on this: OBS settings, browser settings, extension settings, speech recognition service, or Twitch itself.

Subtitles not added to the video stream

In OBS, text can be set up as a separate source: a text layer, browser source, or application window. If this layer isn't included in the scene, viewers won't see it. It may be visible to you in the working interface but missing from the active scene.

  • Check that the subtitle source is added to the scene you're actually using.
  • Make sure it isn't hidden by the eye icon in the sources list.
  • Check the layer order: the text shouldn't be behind a fullscreen game capture or video.
  • Verify that the text hasn't moved beyond the canvas and safe area boundaries.
  • Run a local recording and check whether the subtitles made it into the file.

If there's no text in the recording either, the issue lies in the scene or source. If it's in the recording but the viewer can't see it, you need to check the subtitle delivery method and the Twitch client.

Issues with the subtitle extension

Some solutions display subtitles through a Twitch extension. Such text doesn't become part of the video file: it's overlaid on the player on the viewer's side. So the presence of an extension on the channel doesn't mean its interface is available to everyone.

Check whether the extension is installed on the correct panel and enabled for the current channel. If the extension supports multiple display modes, choose the one designed to show over the video. After making changes, refresh the channel page and test the stream from another account.

It's important to check the page not only in panel editing mode. Open the channel as a regular viewer: that way, you'll see whether the subtitle layer appears for the audience.

Why viewers don't see subtitles on Twitch during a live stream

The viewer has disabled text display

Subtitles may be available on the channel but turned off in the player or in the settings of a specific extension. This happens after browser settings change, site data is cleared, or the viewer switches to another device.

Ask the viewer to check the player controls and extension settings, then refresh the page. It's also worth opening the stream without ad blockers and additional scripts. Browser extensions can hide panels, alter player markup, or block requests through which the text is delivered.

Separately, check viewing in the browser and the mobile app. The interface and extension support may differ, so subtitles available on a computer don't always display the same way on a phone or tablet.

Speech recognition isn't transmitting text

If subtitles are generated automatically, the cause may not be Twitch but the recognition pipeline. The service needs to receive audio from the microphone or mixer, process it, and send the result to the subtitle source.

  1. Check that the correct microphone is selected in the recognition program.
  2. Make sure the app has access to the device and isn't receiving a muted channel.
  3. See whether text appears in the service's own window.
  4. Check whether the browser source in OBS is updating.
  5. Compare the result with a short local voice recording.

If text doesn't appear in the recognition app, Twitch has nothing to do with it. If it's present in the service but disappears in OBS, check the browser source, its URL, page refresh, and connection status.

Delay, audio, and recognition quality

Subtitles may appear with a delay and seem like they aren't working. Recognition usually isn't instant: text arrives in fragments after speech is processed. With connection issues, updates may stop, and the browser source may show stale text.

Check whether your computer and network are overloaded. Close unnecessary sources, restart the subtitle component, and refresh the scene. If you're using noise suppression filters or a virtual mixer, make sure your voice isn't too quiet for recognition.

Music, gameplay, and multiple people talking also reduce accuracy. This doesn't always cause subtitles to disappear entirely, but it creates gaps, delays, and nonsensical phrases.

How to test subtitles before going live

Check the display not only in the editor but also from the viewer's perspective. Open the channel on a second device or in a separate browser where you don't have access to the control panel. Make sure both the video and text are visible, and that subtitles don't overlap important interface elements.

  • Test the scene with voice, music, and game audio.
  • Do a short test recording.
  • Open the channel without owner permissions.
  • Check the desktop and mobile versions.
  • Ask one viewer to confirm the display during the stream.

If subtitles need to be visible to all viewers regardless of devices and extensions, place them inside the video stream. If the ability to turn text on and off matters, use a solution that works on the player side, and check its compatibility with your audience's clients in advance.
