TikTok LIVE Rules in 2026: What Gets a Stream Banned and How Strikes Work

TikTok LIVE Rules in 2026: What Gets a Stream Banned and How Strikes Work

Streams on TikTok LIVE are usually cut off not for anything exotic but for five things: a person under 18 on camera, a recording or a static image playing instead of a live broadcast, the host steering viewers to another platform, the sale or promotion of prohibited goods and gambling on air, and pressuring viewers for gifts. When a violation happens, TikTok ends the stream right away, and what comes next depends on the number of violations: it may temporarily disable LIVE features, take away gifts for a while and, in case of repeat violations, delete the account. According to TikTok's official information, a strike stays on an account for 90 days. The platform does not publish how many strikes lead to a ban. You can host streams only from the age of 18. From a Russian IP address, LIVE is currently not available at all.

Who can go LIVE

The first and strictest condition is age. On November 23, 2022, TikTok raised the minimum age for hosting LIVE streams from 16 to 18. Buying coins and sending gifts is also allowed only from 18. If the system has doubts about your age, it may ask you to confirm it again.

The second condition is followers, and there are plenty of myths here. TikTok officially says only that an account must have enough followers and that the platform is testing different thresholds. TikTok does not publish an exact number. Creators and third-party guides most often mention 1,000 followers, but the threshold can differ between countries and between accounts. New creators get LIVE features gradually.

The third is a clean account history. If your account has recent violations, the LIVE button can disappear even when your age and follower count are fine.

RequirementWhat is known officially
Creator age18+ (since 23.11.2022)
Gifts and coins for viewers18+
FollowersA requirement exists, the number is not published, thresholds are being tested
LIVE monetizationSeparate criteria; low-quality and inauthentic content earns no money

What most often gets a stream shut down

TikTok's general Community Guidelines apply in streams too, but LIVE has its own weak spots. The main difference: moderation watches the broadcast in real time, and the creator is responsible for everything that happens on screen. That includes guests in a shared stream and third-party tools: chat voice-over, translators, overlays. TikTok spelled out this responsibility directly in the rules updated in September 2025.

Minors on camera

Streams by account owners under 18 are prohibited, and so are gifts from them. A risky situation for an adult creator is when a child or teenager appears on camera for a long time, especially if they talk to viewers or "work for gifts". TikTok has stated separately that streams in which children ask for gifts are not allowed on the platform. If your little brother walked into the room for a minute, that is not a catastrophe, but you should not stream with him.

A recording or an image instead of a live stream

LIVE is designed for real-time interaction. Looping a video, a pre-recorded video passed off as a broadcast, an empty room or a freeze-frame on the whole screen all fall into what TikTok calls inauthentic, low-quality content. Such a stream earns no monetization, and with repeats the account risks restrictions. For shopping streams on TikTok Shop in the US the rules are even stricter: the host's speech must be heard in real time, and a static image must not take up more than half of the screen.

If you stream games from a PC, this does not ban scenes and overlays. The screen simply has to show a live process and you yourself, not a looped video. We covered how to set up a PC broadcast properly in the article on how TikTok LIVE Studio works.

Steering viewers to other platforms

Mentioning your Twitch or Telegram is fine. The trouble starts when the main goal of the stream is to move people somewhere else: a QR code across the whole screen, constant calls like "go over there, nothing will happen here". TikTok removes such a stream from recommendations, and repeats lead to restrictions. Separately, the platform reduces the reach of content that urges people to buy goods outside TikTok in countries where TikTok Shop operates.

Regulated goods and advertising

You cannot sell or advertise alcohol, tobacco and vapes, drugs, weapons and other high-risk goods on a stream. Any advertising, even a simple "thanks to the sponsor", must be labeled with the commercial content disclosure setting. Unlabeled advertising loses recommendations.

Gambling

TikTok prohibits promoting or organizing gambling and similar activities, including social casinos. It is easy to run into this by accident: a casino slots stream, a referral link to a bookmaker, a "wheel of fortune" for gifts where viewers are effectively placing bets. Merely showing gambling is restricted by TikTok to an 18+ audience and removed from recommendations.

Other people's music and video

TikTok has no separate rule about music in LIVE; the general one applies: you must not infringe other people's copyright, and music is explicitly named as protected. In practice the risk comes from background tracks from streaming services and from broadcasts of matches, movies and other people's streams. It is safer to use sounds from the TikTok library or music you hold the rights to.

Bots and artificial engagement

Let's be honest: artificially boosting views, likes and followers goes against TikTok's rules. The platform prohibits trading in such services and says it removes fake followers and likes it finds. Mass accounts and unauthorized automation are considered spam. The sharper and more unnatural the jump in numbers, the higher the chance they will be cut and the stream will lose reach. So if you do use promotion, we recommend moderation: a small, smooth volume at the start, live content and interaction with chat, rather than thousands of viewers in an empty stream.

Begging for gifts

Thanking viewers for gifts and setting stream goals is fine. What is prohibited is pressure: asking for gifts non-stop, playing on pity, promising something and not delivering, asking for money for personal needs. Such streams lose the right to monetization, and with repeats the creator's gifts and related features are restricted. How gifts work and how much of them the streamer gets, read in our breakdown of gifts on TikTok LIVE: coins and diamonds.

How strikes and restrictions work

The violation system on TikTok works like this:

  • Content removed means a strike. If moderation decides that a stream or a video violated the rules, a strike is added to the account, and a notification with the reason arrives in the app.
  • A strike lasts 90 days. TikTok officially announced this when it introduced the system in 2023. After 90 days the violation drops out of the account's history.
  • Thresholds are counted separately. There is a threshold for an individual feature, for example LIVE or comments, and for an individual policy category, for example harassment. Reach the threshold in one feature and you are banned. TikTok does not give exact numbers and says they depend on how severe the violation is.
  • An overall threshold. If there are many strikes across different policies and features, the account is permanently removed.
  • A ban on the first offense. For the most severe violations, such as threats of violence, showing real violence or sexual exploitation of children, the account is removed immediately, without accumulating strikes.

Separately from strikes, streams have their own restrictions. A violation during LIVE leads to the current stream being closed. After that TikTok may temporarily bar you from going live, cut the exposure of your LIVE streams in recommendations, and disable gifts and other monetization features. In case of repeats or a serious violation, it may delete the account. TikTok does not publicly spell out exact durations of temporary restrictions: you will see the duration in the violation notification. If an account is close to being removed, TikTok warns about it in advance.

What happenedTypical consequence
A violation during a streamThe stream is closed
Repeated violations in LIVETemporary ban on streaming, fewer impressions
A violation of monetization rulesNotification, restricted gifts and monetization
Strike threshold reached in a feature or policyAccount removal
A severe violationImmediate account removal

You can see your account's state on the account status page in the safety section of the app: it lists the violations and restrictions currently in effect.

How to appeal a restriction

If you are sure moderation made a mistake, file an appeal. TikTok removes a strike if the appeal is justified.

  1. Open the violation notification in your inbox, or go to account status in settings.
  2. Choose the violation in question and tap the button to submit an appeal.
  3. Briefly and to the point, explain why the stream did not violate the specific rule that is cited. For example: "it was me on camera, I am 25", "the music is from the TikTok library", "the Twitch link was mentioned once".
  4. Submit it once and track the status in the app's Safety Center. Repeated identical appeals do not speed up the review.

Do not create a new account to get around a restriction: TikTok explicitly prohibits evading bans, and this will only make things worse. If the whole account is already blocked, there is a step-by-step guide in the article on how to restore a blocked TikTok account.

One-minute checklist before going live

  • Only adults on camera and as guests, no children "for a minute".
  • The screen shows the live you and a live process, not a looped recording and not a freeze-frame.
  • Background music is from the TikTok library or your own, with no tracks from streaming services.
  • No broadcasting of other people's matches, movies or streams.
  • No casinos, betting, bookmaker links or a "wheel of fortune" for gifts.
  • Advertising is labeled as commercial content; no alcohol, vapes or other prohibited goods.
  • Links to other platforms are a mention at most, not the goal of the stream.
  • Chat voice-over and overlays are checked: the word filter is on and moderators are assigned.
  • Gifts are only thanks and goals, with no pressure.
  • If you need to step away, end the stream instead of leaving an empty room.

TikTok LIVE and Russia

Since March 2022, TikTok itself has suspended uploading of new content and live streams for Russia. According to Russian media in 2026, the situation has not changed: from a Russian IP in the official app you can neither host nor watch LIVE, and monetization is unavailable. There is no timeline for features to return. So everything said above applies to creators who work legally from countries where LIVE is available. If you are in Russia and want to stream right now, it is more honest to look at platforms that work here officially.

If you need a start

Stream Promotion has been helping creators with their first audience and followers since 2015. If you stream from a country where TikTok LIVE is available, take a look at our services for TikTok promotion. We recommend starting with small volumes and combining them with live content: that way growth looks natural and does not hurt the account.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers do I need to go LIVE?

TikTok officially does not name a number and says it is testing different thresholds. Creators most often run into a threshold of 1,000 followers, but in your country and for your account it may be different. The mandatory condition is being 18+.

How long does a strike last on TikTok?

90 days, after which the violation drops out of the account's history. But a ban itself, if you have already hit the threshold, is not lifted after 90 days.

How long does a ban on streaming last?

TikTok does not publish fixed durations. The duration is stated in the violation notification and in the account status. Repeated violations extend the restrictions, and severe ones lead to account removal.

Can I stream a pre-recorded video?

You should not pass off a recording as a live stream: TikTok considers such content inauthentic, it earns no monetization, and with repeats the account risks restrictions. For finished videos there are regular posts.

Do you get banned for boosting?

Boosting goes against TikTok's rules: the platform removes fake followers and likes and treats mass accounts as spam. Sharp, unnatural jumps are the main risk. If you use promotion, do it in moderation and together with live content.

Can I host TikTok LIVE from Russia?

Not from a Russian IP in the official app: since March 2022 streams and uploading of new content have been suspended for Russia, and as of 2026 this has not changed.
