How to Become a VTuber for Free in 2026: Software, Model and Setup

You can become a VTuber in 2026 without spending a cent: every program you need is free. The fastest route is a PNGtuber in veadotube mini or PNGTuber Plus, which takes one evening and two images. For a 3D avatar, build a model in VRoid Studio and run it in VSeeFace or Warudo. For a 2D Live2D model you need VTube Studio: it is free, but it shows a watermark with webcam tracking, and for monetized streams the developer asks you to buy a paid version. An ordinary webcam and a microphone are enough hardware, and getting a transparent background into OBS is done through Spout2 or Game Capture.

Three formats: which one to choose

Before installing anything, decide what your avatar will be. That determines the time it takes, the load on your PC and how much you will have to draw.

If you do not draw, 3D through VRoid Studio gives the liveliest result for zero rubles. If you want the classic 2D anime look, you will either have to draw and rig the model yourself or find a ready-made one with a suitable license.

A PNGtuber in one evening

A PNGtuber is an avatar made of images that changes when you speak. No camera is needed: the program reacts to the sound from your microphone.

veadotube mini

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. On itch.io the price is "name your own price", so you can download it for free. The current version, 2.2, came out on March 24, 2026. The program switches between two images (silent and talking) and supports blinking, GIF animation, bouncing while you speak and an unlimited number of expressions on hotkeys, a gamepad, MIDI or Stream Deck.

1. Draw or assemble two PNG images with a transparent background: mouth closed and mouth open. If you like, add a version with closed eyes.
2. Load them into veadotube mini and select your microphone.
3. Adjust the volume threshold so the avatar does not "talk" from keyboard noise.
4. Assign keys to expressions if you made extra images.
5. Add the program to OBS (the methods are described below) and do a test recording.

PNGTuber Plus

It is free on Steam (which lists Windows 10), and on itch.io version 1.4.5 is available for Windows, macOS and Linux at a pay-what-you-want price. Here the avatar is assembled from separate parts: hair can bounce and lag behind the head, and parts can be hidden while speaking or blinking. For OBS you change the background color in the settings: transparent, or green for chroma key.

Free 3D: VRoid Studio, then VSeeFace or Warudo

VRoid Studio by pixiv is free for everyone and runs on Windows, macOS (there is a Steam version) and iPad. Version 2.14.0 came out in June 2026; on iPad it added ads and a VRoid Plus subscription to remove them. For desktop the developer recommends the Steam version. Minimum requirements for Windows: Windows 10 or 11, a 6th-generation Core i5 or a 3rd-generation Ryzen 5, and 8 GB of RAM.

1. Create a new model from a template and adjust the face, hairstyle, eyes and body with the sliders.
2. Pick clothes from the built-in presets or paint your own texture directly on the model.
3. Check the expressions and blinking in the expressions tab.
4. Export the model in the VRM format. For VSeeFace choose the VRM0 export: this program does not open VRM 1.0.
5. Load the VRM into VSeeFace or Warudo, select your webcam and calibrate your face.

VSeeFace is a free program for 64-bit Windows 8 and newer only, current version 1.13.38c5. The developer allows its use for commercial purposes too. It supports VRM0 and VSFAvatar models and does not support Live2D.

Warudo is free on Steam and has been in early access since July 14, 2023; the developers call it feature complete. It needs Windows 10, at least a Core i5-9400F and a GeForce GTX 1660. It can do more: hand tracking from a webcam through the built-in MediaPipe, environments, props, blueprints and Stream Deck control. It is free for streaming if you personally own the rights to your VTuber persona and your accounts on the platforms, and you have no contract requiring a set number of broadcast hours. Those who stream on behalf of a company need the paid Warudo Pro.

2D: VTube Studio and free models

VTube Studio is the main program for Live2D models. The desktop version is free on Steam for Windows and macOS and includes all features, including loading your own models. There are two limitations. First: with webcam tracking a watermark hangs in the frame, while with phone tracking there is none. The DLC Remove Watermark removes it and costs $14.99 in the US Steam store. Second: in the FAQ the developer writes that commercial use (YouTube Super Chat, monetized Twitch and the like) requires buying at least one paid version, because of the Live2D license. Companies need a separate license. The program does not support 3D VRoid models.

You can make your own model in Live2D Cubism Editor (Windows and macOS, latest stable version 5.3.04 from September 3, 2026). You first get a 42-day PRO trial, and after that it drops to FREE with hard limits:

• one texture per model, up to 2048 pixels;
• up to 100 ArtMesh and up to 30 parameters;
• up to 50 deformers and up to 30 parts;
• video and GIF export no larger than 1280×720.

The FREE version may be used commercially by individuals and small companies with annual revenue under 10 million yen.

Ready-made free models exist too, but read the terms. The Akari model built into VTube Studio may only be used for test streams, without commercial use and without building your own persona on it. The official Live2D samples each have their own rules: some may not be modified, collaboration characters cannot be used commercially, and Hatsune Miku and Unity-chan follow the rules of their owners.

Tracking: webcam, iPhone, Leap Motion

• Webcam. Works everywhere and is free. VSeeFace recommends a 720p-1080p camera, preferably on USB 3, and good lighting. The downside is the CPU load.
• iPhone. According to VTube Studio, the most accurate option: smoother blinking and expressions, and it takes load off your PC's CPU. Models with Face ID or an A12 chip and newer work. In Warudo and VSeeFace the iPhone connects through iFacialMocap or FaceMotion3D, and for full facial expressions the model needs 52 ARKit blendshapes.
• Android. It works in VTube Studio, but accuracy is lower than with a webcam. The free app sends tracking to the PC for no more than 5 minutes; after that you need the PRO version.
• Leap Motion. A separate hand sensor, supported in VSeeFace and Warudo. Warudo recommends the second generation (Leap Motion Controller 2) on a neck or chest mount; the first one often loses the hands.

Output to OBS with a transparent background

You do not need a green screen or chroma key: all the programs in this article can output an image with transparency.

Spout2 is the lightest method. Close OBS, install the Spout2 plugin for your OBS version, open OBS again, add a Spout2 Capture source and select the sender. In VTube Studio set the source mode to Premultiplied Alpha, otherwise the colors will look off.

Game Capture. Add a Game Capture source, set the mode to Capture specific window, select the program window and enable Allow Transparency. In VSeeFace, press the ※ button first to hide the interface. A regular Window Capture does not pass transparency.

Virtual camera. Add a Video Capture Device, select the program's camera and set the video format to ARGB, otherwise the background will be opaque.

On macOS VTube Studio does not output transparency: use window capture with a chroma key filter and a background color that is not present in the model. veadotube mini on a Mac works through Syphon Client. Common problems and how to fix them

Low FPS in the avatar or the game

Cap the avatar program at 60 frames and set the camera to 30 FPS: according to VSeeFace, a 60 FPS camera doubles the tracking load on the CPU. In VSeeFace run "Recommend Settings" on the start screen, and if power is short, lower the tracking model all the way down to the Toaster mode. Turn off game boosters, Razer Game Boost and MSI Afterburner: the VTube Studio FAQ names them as a frequent cause of high load.

Lag and delayed expressions

First check your lighting: in poor light a webcam lowers its frame rate by itself. In Warudo, MediaPipe tracking usually runs at 15-30 FPS and can drop to 10 during 3D games. With an iPhone over Wi-Fi, restart the router, the PC and the phone. If the lips lag behind your voice, add an audio delay in the OBS Advanced Audio Properties.

Black screen or GPU load

On laptops and PCs with two graphics cards, Spout2 and Game Capture can show a black screen. Assign OBS and the avatar program the high-performance GPU in the Windows graphics settings and run both programs as administrator. If a 3D game eats the GPU, switch MediaPipe in Warudo to the CPU by clearing the GPU Acceleration checkbox, or get a Leap Motion for your hands.

Licenses: what is allowed on stream and what is not

• VRoid Studio. Models made in the program can be used on streams, including for income. The rights to the base models, clothes and presets stay with pixiv. Purchased textures and items have their own terms.
• Models from VRoid Hub and Booth. Check the license fields: non-commercial use only, personal profit, use by a company, whether modifications are allowed and whether credit to the author is required.
• VSeeFace. Free, including for commercial use, but you may not modify the program itself or pass it off as your own.
• Warudo. Free for the streams of an independent VTuber, while companies buy Warudo Pro.
• VTube Studio. For monetized streams, buy at least one paid version; the Akari model is not suitable for commercial use.

Never take someone else's model without the author's permission, even if it was "lying around for free somewhere". If the model will later become the basis of your channel, it is better to choose one right away that explicitly allows personal commercial activity. The first weeks are the hardest for a new VTuber: in a platform's directory almost nobody opens a channel with zero viewers. So that your first streams do not go into the void, build your own plan in the viewer management panel: you pick the platform, the number of viewers and the stream time there. Can I become a VTuber with no money at all?

Yes. veadotube mini, PNGTuber Plus, VRoid Studio, VSeeFace and Warudo are free, and an ordinary webcam is enough for tracking. You only pay to remove the VTube Studio watermark, or for a ready-made model if you do not want to make one yourself.

Which format is lightest for a weak PC?

Does VSeeFace work on a Mac?

Why won't VSeeFace open a model from VRoid Studio?

Most likely the model was exported as VRM 1.0. VSeeFace supports only VRM0, so export the model again and choose the VRM0 format.

Do I need an iPhone for good tracking?

Not necessarily. A webcam in good light gives a decent result. An iPhone conveys blinking and expressions more accurately and takes load off the CPU, so it is worth adding once you know this format suits you.
