How to stream chess in 2026: Lichess, Chess.com, OBS and channel growth

How to stream chess in 2026: Lichess, Chess.com, OBS and channel growth

To stream chess, all you need is OBS Studio, a browser and an account on Twitch, YouTube or Kick: add the browser window with your game as a "Window Capture" source, put your webcam next to it, pick the Chess category and turn on a 30–120 second stream delay for blitz (longer for rapid) so viewers cannot feed you moves or find your game. Lichess also has a built-in "Streamer mode" in the game menu, and the site will show your stream to its users for free if the stream title contains "lichess.org". Below: step-by-step setup, formats, fair-play rules and what the Lichess and Chess.com programs actually give you.

What you need for a chess stream

Chess is an undemanding genre: the game runs in a browser, the picture is static, and even a weak laptop can handle a 1080p broadcast. The minimum kit:

  • a Lichess or Chess.com account (or both);
  • OBS Studio or Streamlabs;
  • a microphone — viewers come for your thinking out loud, so audio matters more than video;
  • a webcam — nice to have, but not required at the start;
  • a channel on Twitch, YouTube or Kick.

If OBS is not installed yet, go through our step-by-step OBS Studio setup for streaming first, then come back to the chess part.

Capturing the board in OBS

There are two working ways to put the board on screen.

  1. Window Capture. Open the game in a separate browser window, add a "Window Capture" source in OBS and pick that window. Then crop the extras: hold Alt and drag the edges of the source. This way viewers see only the board, clocks and moves, not your tabs and bookmarks.
  2. Display Capture. Fits if you switch a lot between the board, analysis and a game database. The downside: everything gets on screen, notifications included, so turn them off for the broadcast.

The Chess.com app is not suitable for streaming: the Chess.com help center says outright that you can only stream from the website, not from mobile apps.

Streamer mode on Lichess

Lichess really does have this feature. Open any game, click the menu icon next to the board and switch on the Streamer mode toggle. The site rearranges the page: player names and clocks sit above and below the board, the clock digits get larger, and the block under the board disappears. The board no longer jumps between modes, so your OBS crop stays put. The setting is remembered in the browser. The toggle is available on a wide desktop screen and is missing in the vertical mobile view.

And on Chess.com

We found no official Streamer mode on Chess.com: it is not in the help center, and on the site forum users have been asking for such an option since 2021 without a reply from staff. So on Chess.com just work with window capture and cropping.

Overlays and webcam

A typical chess streamer scene looks like this: the board takes 60–70% of the frame on the left, the webcam is on the right, and below it sits the chat or a donation block. A few tips:

  • The webcam must not cover the clocks. Viewers watch the time constantly, especially in time trouble.
  • Make 3–4 scenes: "Game", "Analysis", "Camera" and "Break" — and switch between them with hotkeys.
  • Add a counter of wins/losses/draws for the stream, or your current rating with a goal. A new viewer instantly understands what is going on.

You do not need to crank up the bitrate for chess: the picture is almost still, and 1080p at 30 frames looks clean even at modest values. More in the article on how to choose a stream bitrate.

Stream delay against hints and stream sniping

A chess stream runs in real time, and that brings two problems. First, viewers type moves in chat, sometimes with an engine. Second, stream sniping: someone sees your board, finds you in the opponent search and plays you knowing what you are thinking. A stream delay solves both.

In OBS it is turned on like this: Settings → Advanced → Stream Delay. You can set anything from 1 to 1800 seconds. There is also a checkbox "Preserve cutoff point (increase delay) when reconnecting" — with it, if your internet drops, viewers will not see the missed part ahead of time. The delayed video is kept in RAM, and OBS shows the approximate usage.

Neither Lichess nor Chess.com publishes a recommended number of seconds in its help. The guidelines below are practical, based on game length:

Time controlDelayComment
Bullet 1+0, blitz 3+030–60 sThe game moves faster than a viewer can hint
Blitz 5+0, 5+360–120 sA compromise between protection and a lively chat
Rapid 10+0, 15+103–5 minThe position goes stale for the hinter
Tournaments with prizes5–15 minOr as much as the organizer requires

The price of a delay is that chat lags behind you. So do polls, conversation and analysis between games, or turn the delay off on the "Analysis" scene if you are playing without an opponent.

Fair play rules in brief

Both sites are strict about help during a game, and streaming is no exception.

  • Lichess forbids any outside help in a game in progress: engines, opening books, endgame tablebases and move advice from people or programs. The rules specifically mention commentators on streams and social media. So if you play on chat's advice, that is a violation.
  • Chess.com forbids help from other people, engines, browser extensions, endgame tablebases and automatic move checking during a game. At the same time, its help says that hints viewers write in chat on their own are in most cases not considered cheating — it is part of streaming that cannot be fully excluded.
  • Speedruns (a new account that "climbs" to a high rating) are banned on Lichess. On Chess.com they are allowed only for partner streamers on specially marked accounts.
  • A shared account on Lichess is acceptable if the profile states it is a shared streamer account and only one person plays a given game. "Hand and brain" is only for unrated games the opponent knows about.

Formats that work

Blitz with subscribers

The simplest way to involve chat. Create a channel team on Lichess and run private arenas in it, and on Chess.com a club with tournaments. Accept challenges in turn or at random: for Lichess there are extensions that accept a random challenge from the list so nobody feels slighted by your choice. Separately, on Chess.com you can link your account to Twitch and get notified when subscribers challenge you.

Game review

Review your own games from yesterday, your viewers' games or top tournaments. For official tournaments Lichess has a Broadcasts section where moves come in real time, and "Studies" for preparing your review.

Tournaments

Playing in arenas and title tournaments while commenting out loud is the most spectacular format, and also the strictest about delay. Before prize events, read the rules of the specific tournament: the broadcast requirements are set by the organizer.

"Rating on demand"

This is a challenge: chat sets a goal — for example, raise your blitz to 1800 in a month or win 10 games in a row — and you go for it on your main account. Viewers may choose an opening or a time control before the game, but not moves during it. You must not buy or "order" a rating from other players: on Lichess, artificially inflating a rating is explicitly called a rule violation.

The Chess category on Twitch, Kick and YouTube

PlatformWhere to chooseNotes
TwitchThe Chess category in stream settingsBoth Lichess and Chess.com require it to recognize your stream
KickThe Chess category when going liveWorks for Chess.com Partner; Lichess does not support Kick
YouTubeStudio: the "Gaming" category and the game titleYouTube sets the list of games, and its help does not guarantee a separate title

Write the stream title specifically: "Blitz with subscribers up to 1800 | lichess.org" is clearer than "Playing chess".

Lichess and Chess.com programs for streamers

Lichess Streamer

Create a streamer page on Lichess, connect your Twitch or YouTube channel (Kick is not in the form), fill in the description, upload an image and submit it for review. Moderators review applications for up to 72 hours. After that there is one rule: the stream title must contain "lichess.org" and the category must be Chess. Then the site finds your broadcast on its own and gives you perks: a streamer badge on your profile, a spot at the top of the streamers list, a notification to your followers on Lichess and your stream shown next to your games, tournaments and studies. When you stream something other than Lichess, remove the keyword from the title.

Lichess has no partner program that pays money: the site is completely free, lives on donations and shows no ads.

Chess.com Streamer and Community Streamers

For the official Chess.com partner program you need:

  • 1000+ followers or subscribers on your main platform, or recognition in the chess community;
  • the main platform being Twitch, YouTube or Kick;
  • at least 10 hours of chess streaming per month;
  • after joining, playing chess content only on Chess.com and affiliated sites and showing the Chess.com logo;
  • content that is mostly family-friendly.

Partners get onto Chess.com/TV and the streamers page, into a private Discord, receive a partner code with a 15% commission and can run speedrun accounts. Not everyone gets a reply: if you are turned down, they advise growing a bit and applying again in a few months.

For beginners, Chess.com announced the Community Streamers program with no audience threshold: you connect Twitch in the linked accounts section, set the Chess category — and during a broadcast you are on the site's streamers list, and your profile gets a mark with a link to your channel.

The Chess.com affiliate program

A separate Chess.com affiliate program pays 15% of every subscription signed up through your link, renewals included. A new user has 30 days to buy after clicking, an already registered one 24 hours. Requirements: the account must be at least 60 days old, with no violations in the past year, age 18+ (or parental consent), a mandatory disclosure of the partnership and no paid advertising. Payouts are PayPal only, from 50 dollars, 35–45 days after the end of the month. For streamers from Russia this is a serious limitation: PayPal suspended operations in the country in March 2022, and Chess.com publishes no other payout methods.

How to get your first viewers

  1. Connect the platforms' programs from day one. A Lichess streamer page and Community Streamers on Chess.com bring viewers straight from the sites where people already play.
  2. Stream on a schedule. Three fixed evenings a week work better than seven random broadcasts.
  3. Find your niche: a beginner's opening repertoire, Chess960, reviews of viewers' games, a stream in Russian at hours when the category has few Russian-speaking channels.
  4. Do joint streams with other chess players: a 10-game match or a shared tournament review. We described how to set this up technically in the article on a joint broadcast on Twitch.
  5. Cut clips: queen blunders, saved time scrambles and beautiful mating attacks spread well in short videos.

The hardest part at the start is an empty chat and a zero on the viewer counter: in the Chess category directory, channels usually rank higher if someone is already watching them. Our service can help here: the Twitch services page offers viewers, followers and chat bots, and in the viewer control panel you set the online count and time yourself, so your first broadcasts do not look empty. For Kick there are separate services.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stream chess from a phone?

From Chess.com — no: the site's help says you can only stream from the web version. Lichess works in a phone browser, but Streamer mode is not available there. The most convenient option is a computer with OBS.

What delay should I set for a chess stream?

The platforms publish no official numbers. For bullet and blitz, 30–120 seconds is usually enough, for rapid 3–5 minutes, for prize tournaments 5–15 minutes or whatever the organizer's rules say.

Is it cheating if viewers write moves in chat?

If you do not follow them — no. Chess.com directly calls such hints part of streaming. But Lichess considers playing on people's recommendations, commentators on streams included, a violation, so a delay and a "no moves in chat" rule protect you first of all.

How many followers do I need for a Chess.com partnership?

1000+ followers or subscribers on your main platform and at least 10 hours of chess streaming per month. Without an audience you can join Community Streamers through Twitch.
