Capture Card for Streaming in 2026: Which One to Choose

Capture Card for Streaming in 2026: Which One to Choose for a Console, Camera and Two PCs

For console streaming in 2026, most people will be fine with an external USB card that captures 1080p60 and passes through 4K60 HDR, such as the Elgato Game Capture Neo (about 19,000 rubles on Yandex Market). If you play on a 120–144 Hz TV or monitor, get a card with HDMI 2.1 and 4K144 passthrough: the Elgato 4K X or the AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1. For a mirrorless or DSLR camera you need a card without passthrough, such as the Cam Link 4K, and for a two-PC setup the most reliable choice is an internal PCIe card in the streaming PC. Below: what to look at when choosing, which models fit which job, and how to set everything up in OBS.

When you don't need a capture card

First check whether you need one at all. The PS5 and Xbox Series can stream on their own: the broadcast starts from the console menu, with no PC and no extra cost. The downsides are no scenes, overlays, alerts or a proper audio mixer, and a limited choice of platforms. To try streaming and see if you like it, that is enough. We described the steps in the article how to stream on a console without a capture card.

The second case is two computers. You can send the picture from the gaming PC to the streaming PC over the local network via NDI: in OBS this takes the DistroAV plugin (you need OBS 31.1.1 or newer and NDI Runtime 6.3 or newer). No card is needed, but the network has to be wired and fast, and part of the encoding load still stays on the gaming PC. If the network has dips or the gaming PC's graphics card is maxed out, a capture card works more reliably.

External USB or internal PCIe

TypeProsCons
External USBWorks with laptops and Macs, easy to move between PCs, many models need no driversNeeds a fast port (USB 3.2 Gen 2 for 4K144), sensitive to hubs and long cables
Internal PCIeDoesn't use up USB, stable bandwidth, usually the best capture modesDesktop PC with a free slot only, usually Windows only, can't be moved to a laptop

If you have a laptop or a Mac, the choice is obvious: USB. If your streaming PC is a desktop that sits next to the gaming one, a PCIe card spares you port problems. For example, the Elgato 4K Pro goes into a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot and, according to the manufacturer, is not compatible with laptops, while the AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575) requires PCIe Gen 3 x4. Both officially work on Windows only.

What to look at

Capture resolution and frame rate

This is what the card sends to the computer, that is, what your viewers will see. For streaming on Twitch, Kick and VK Video Live, 1080p60 is usually enough: platforms recompress the stream anyway, and most viewers watch in Full HD. You need 4K60 if you record videos for YouTube or want headroom for the future. Capture at 120–240 fps is mostly for slow-motion replays and recording, not for live broadcasts.

Passthrough

A card with passthrough has a second HDMI output: you play on your TV or monitor without lag while a copy of the signal goes to the computer. Note that the passthrough and capture resolutions are usually different. The Elgato Neo, for example, captures up to 1080p60 but passes through up to 4K60 HDR. If you play at 120 or 144 Hz, look for HDMI 2.1 passthrough: on cards with HDMI 2.0, 4K passthrough is limited to 60 Hz. One more caveat from the manufacturers: on monitors that use DSC compression, 4K passthrough may only work up to 120 Hz.

VRR and HDR

On most cards, VRR (variable refresh rate) and HDR are supported only in passthrough, that is, on your screen. HDR capture is not available on all of them and is often limited to certain modes and to Windows. For streaming you hardly need HDR: platforms broadcast SDR, and Elgato cards can convert HDR to SDR themselves (tone mapping) so the picture on air doesn't look washed out.

Latency

Manufacturers call passthrough latency zero, but almost nobody publishes exact figures for capture. For the 4K S, Elgato gives a preview window latency from 30 ms on powerful systems. For streaming, capture latency doesn't matter; what matters is that you don't play from the picture in OBS. Play from the screen connected through passthrough.

USB and Type-C

1080p60 cards work fine on USB 3.0 (also known as USB 3.2 Gen 1, 5 Gbps). For 4K144 you need USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps: this is stated outright for both the Elgato 4K X and the AVerMedia GC553G2. On a Gen 1 port the 4K X works, but with reduced modes. A Type-C connector does not guarantee speed by itself: check in the motherboard or laptop specs that it is really Gen 2. Connect the card directly, without hubs.

Mac compatibility

Most USB cards work on a Mac through OBS, but with limitations. The AVerMedia GC553G2 captures up to 4K60 on macOS (not 4K144), without HDR, and 4K60 in MJPEG requires an M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra or newer chip. On the Elgato 4K X and 4K S, HDR capture is available only on Windows. The PCIe cards Elgato 4K Pro and AVerMedia GC575 are not supported on Mac.

Which card to choose for which job

The specs below are taken from the official Elgato and AVerMedia websites. Prices are an approximate range on Yandex Market as of late October 2026; they vary a lot by seller, so check on the spot.

Elgato Game Capture 4K XCapture and passthrough up to 4K144, HDMI 2.1, VRR, USB 3.2 Gen 2; about 33,000–41,000 rublesPlaying on a 120–144 Hz TV or monitor
AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 (GC553G2)Capture up to 4K144 (Windows), 4K144, 1440p240, 1080p360 passthrough, VRR, USB 3.2 Gen 2; about 22,000–42,000 rublesAn alternative to the 4K X, with 5.1 capture on Windows
Elgato Cam Link 4KCapture up to 4K30 (4K60 in MJPEG with compatible cameras), no passthrough, USB 3.0; about 14,000–21,000 rublesA DSLR or mirrorless camera as a webcam
Elgato 4K Pro or AVerMedia GC575PCIe, HDMI 2.1, 4K60 HDR capture, passthrough up to 4K144 (up to 8K60 on the 4K Pro), Windows only; 4K Pro about 36,000–38,000 rublesTwo-PC setup, a permanent desk build

The Elgato HD60 X, long recommended as the sweet spot, has been discontinued by the manufacturer; the 4K S took its place. Leftover HD60 X units still turn up in stores, and if you find one cheaper than the Neo, it is a perfectly good option. For a camera, keep in mind that the card sees only a clean HDMI signal, so you need to turn off the on-screen info output over HDMI in the camera menu, otherwise frames and numbers will show up in the picture.

For two PCs, any card with passthrough will do: the HDMI or DisplayPort output of the gaming graphics card goes into the card, passthrough goes to the monitor, and capture goes to the streaming computer. If the monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz, you need a card with HDMI 2.1, otherwise you will be limiting yourself in the game.

Black screen on PS5: HDCP

The most common complaint is that the card is connected but OBS shows a black screen. The cause is almost always HDCP, copy protection over HDMI. It is on by default on the PS5, and no proper card will capture such a signal. To turn it off, connect the PS5 straight to a TV, without the card, open Settings → System → HDMI → Enable HDCP and switch it off. Then connect the card.

On Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch, HDCP is off by default but turns on when you launch video services such as Netflix. If the picture disappears after such an app, restart the console. Streaming-service movies and Blu-rays protected with HDCP cannot be captured at all. For more on streaming from PS5 and Xbox, see our article how to stream GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox.

Another PS5 trap: if headphones are plugged into the controller, game sound stops going out over HDMI and the card won't receive it. Listen to the game through the PC or the TV.

Connecting and setting up in OBS

  1. Connect the console or gaming PC to the card's HDMI IN, and the HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor.
  2. Connect the card to the computer with the supplied cable, straight into a port on the motherboard.
  3. In OBS, click the plus in the Sources panel and choose Video Capture Device. Pick your card from the device list.
  4. Leave Resolution/FPS Type on Device Default. Turn Buffering off. Set Color Range to Default or Partial for a console.
  5. Under Audio Output Mode choose Capture audio only. That way the game sound is a separate track in the mixer and you can adjust its volume.
  6. To hear the sound yourself through the PC, open Advanced Audio Properties and in the Audio Monitoring column choose Monitor and Output for the card. In the OBS audio settings set 48 kHz and stereo.

If the source freezes or shows a black frame, click Deactivate and then Activate in its properties: this is a soft restart of the device. The remaining encoder and bitrate settings are covered in the article OBS settings for streaming.

Audio ahead of or behind the picture

Video from the card reaches OBS slightly later than sound from the microphone, so your voice may run ahead of the game. Elgato recommends this approach. If the card's picture lags, add the Video Delay (Async) filter to the source: it shifts the card's video together with its sound. If you need to line up the microphone and other sources with the card, open Advanced Audio Properties and set a Sync Offset for them. A starting value is about 200 ms; then fine-tune on a recording: clap your hands in front of the camera or talk during a cutscene and see whether they match.

Cheap Chinese cards: what really works

Marketplaces and AliExpress are full of cards for 600–5,000 rubles labeled "4K 60 FPS". That isn't always a lie, but the label is almost always about the input, not the capture. What is inside and what to expect:

  • The cheapest USB 2.0 dongles send the signal compressed as MJPEG. That is usually no more than 1080p30, and compression artifacts are visible in fast motion. Fine for video calls and a camera, weak for fast-paced games.
  • Models with the MS2130 chip and USB 3.0 accept up to 4K30 on input but record at most 1080p60, though uncompressed. According to independent reviewers' tests, their latency is around 6–11 frames. For streaming it is a workable option for next to nothing.
  • Passthrough is often missing or limited to 1080p60. Playing from the OBS screen with that latency is impossible, so without passthrough you need an HDMI splitter, and it may not pass HDR and high refresh rates.
  • Such cards don't bypass HDCP either: the rule about turning it off on the PS5 applies the same way. If a seller promises the card "removes HDCP", that is a reason to be wary, not a plus.
  • No VRR, HDR or 120 Hz, no decent software or firmware updates, and the warranty depends on the seller.

The honest bottom line: a cheap USB 3.0 card is fine as a start for 1080p streaming if you play on a second screen through a splitter or on a console without 120 Hz. If you stream regularly and play on a good TV, paying extra for a card with passthrough pays off in peace of mind. Look in the description for the specific chip and USB type, not the "4K" figures on the box.

You have the card, now you need viewers

A good picture helps keep people who have already come in, but a new channel with no viewers in a category list is almost invisible. So that your first streams don't go out into the void, you can raise your starting audience through our viewer control panel: you choose the platform, the number of viewers and the time yourself, and there is a free test to try it out.

FAQ

Do I need a capture card to stream from a PC if I have only one computer?

No. From a single PC, OBS captures the game directly through the Game Capture or Display Capture sources. You need a card for a console, an HDMI camera or a second computer.

Why does OBS show a black screen even though the card is visible?

Most often HDCP is on for the PS5: turn it off in the console's HDMI settings. If that didn't help, check that the card is on USB 3.0 without a hub, and do Deactivate and Activate in the source properties.

Is a 1080p60 card enough for streaming in 2026?

Yes, for Twitch, Kick and VK Video Live that is enough. The main thing is that passthrough supports the resolution and refresh rate of your screen.

Does Elgato work on a Mac?

The USB models Neo, 4K S, 4K X and Cam Link 4K officially support macOS, but HDR capture on the 4K S and 4K X is available only on Windows. The PCIe card 4K Pro does not work on a Mac.

Which USB cable do I need for 4K144?

The one in the box, and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port at 10 Gbps. On a 5 Gbps port the card will work, but the high modes won't be available.
